The Beautiful People Project
Info for Participants

Thanks for considering participating.

You've received a big compliment. I approach just a few individuals that offer something of great beauty to the world. Some are activists, artists, writers, and others working towards positive changes in their lives and the world around them. Others I've selected because they are exceptionally good-looking women and men.

There's profound beauty in every person - and I've tried to reflect this in my photography for many years. I've also volunteered thousands of hours for worthy causes. But this project started with a focus on individuals that I believed many people would consider the most physically attractive.

Interviewing this somewhat random selection of personalities, I was impressed by their ideas, goals and activities of great beauty. They helped inspire me to expand the scope of this project.

Here's how it works:

If you're interested in participating, we can meet and talk further. There's no pressure to agree to be photographed.

In our first meeting, usually at a mutually convenient café, there's a short interview that gives you a chance to express yourself in this project. I believe it also improves our rapport and makes for much better photography. This meeting can be less than an hour.

Please bring your resume, if you have one. I can probably suggest ways to improve it, as I have for hundreds of volunteers I've managed in my public service work.

Please bring more of photographs of you - anything from professional photos to grainy, amateur shots. When I see how you work with the camera, I can come up with new ideas to help create more valuable photos for you. If you do any art, photography or writing on your own, please also bring that. None of this is required, but it's helpful for me to see. You don't need to make me copies to keep.

If you decide to do a photoshoot, I'll dedicate extra time to put you at ease, using professional photographic techniques to help bring out your best. Your photos may appear in gallery exhibits, a book on inner and outer beauty and other media. A model release puts in writing how your photos can be used, with specific limitations and protections for you.

For this project, I've already photographed 24 people with a total of more than 1,700 pictures. This project will continue at least through 2010. I may photograph 40 more women and men, famous and unknown. Most books take at least a year to write. I'm also busy with full time public service work. This book will not be published before 2010.

Your photos can happen much sooner! Before and during your photo session, I’ll ask questions to help you think about and express more of yourself. Your answers may be shown along with the photos. You don’t have to answer any questions you’re not comfortable with. You'll have the time and opportunity to edit what you say before it's published.  |  Prep for Your Photoshoot

The interview offers you several advantages over conventional point and shoot photography:

  • You can express yourself to the world.
  • It puts you at ease for a more relaxed photoshoot with much better results.
  • Many participants find the questions thought provoking and helpful for thinking about their lives.

So far, all the participants have enjoyed the whole process and been very satisfied with their results. For example:

These are the most intimate pictures ever taken of me. Not in a sexual way, really, just non-threatening and relaxed. I like that they show something of my inner self, not just posing for the camera. They're the first pictures ever taken where I don't look like a deer caught in the headlights. --Dio G.

As a participant, you'd get free copies of the best photos, with more available at reduced prices.

Thanks for your interest,

-Bill
