The Gopher Tortoise lives in upland habitat and digs underground
burrows for shelter. Hundreds of other species also use these
burrows which makes the tortoise a very important keystone
species for entire ecosystems.
Loggerhead Sea Turtles are the most common nesters along
the Florida coast. Milton is one of many sea turtles on display
at the center, raised from a hatchling, he will one day
be released.

The Giant Swallowtail measures 5 inches across. It can be seen
drinking nectar from flowering plants in the hammock. Trying to find
the caterpillars of this species may be difficult because they are
camouflaged to look like bird droppings.
This Florida Kingsnake is one of many live animals on exhibit at the
nature center. It is a beneficial inhabitant of the region feeding on
rodents and other snakes. It will even eat venomous snakes.

Eastern Screech Owls only 8 or 9 inches long live in forested areas
taking up residence in tree cavities or man made nest boxes.
These small predators will eat roaches, mice or other small animals.
Listen for their trilling call.
Golden Silk Orbweavers are a common sight along the hammock
trails. Their two inch bodies and 5 inch spread are impressive,
but not dangerous to humans.
