The tiered building on the left is the Academy of Sciences, built during Soviet control.  It has been nicknamed 'The Kremlin' and 'Stalin's Birthday Cake.'

The floor and walls are dotted with old stone tombs, which were inundated by a flood - Blamed for a cholera and typhoid outbreak that killed a third of Riga's population in 1709.
