Franklin Delano Roosevelt began his first  presidency on a tidal wave of public support.  In the 1932 election, he crushed incumbant Herbert Hoover and carried the Democrats to a solid majority in congress.  In his first hundred days in office he signed 15 major pieces of legislation designed to relieve the suffering of millions of Americans from the Great Depression.  The New Deal Era had begun.

Herbert Clark Hoover became the Republican Presidential nominee in 1928.  He said then that "We in America today are nearer to the final triumph over poverty than ever before in history of any land."  His election seemed to ensure prosperity.  Within months the stock market crashed, and the nation spiraled downward into a depression, later known as The Great Depression.
Henry Agard Wallace was the secretary of agriculture during Rossevelts first two terms in office.  He was a supporter of New Deal policies, and set up within the Department of Agriculture, the Adjustments Administration, to adminster the farm price support program.
