PHONOPHANATIC'S  PHONOGRAPH  PHOLDER    PAGE II

This page will primarily feature related collectibles that were part of the era of the acoustic phonograph.

The disc talking machines required replaceable steel, bamboo, cactus, and even ivory needles to play the early shellac 78rpm records. A whole industry was developed to meet this need. Phonograph needle manufacturers packaged their wares in brightly colored tins to market their product.
Another collectible is Nipper, the trademark of the Victor Talking Machine Company of Camden, New Jersey. Nippers of all sizes were made as giveaways and store front advertisements.  Nipper is the most famous of dogs. Known world wide for over 100 years.

In another photo I've tried to show various records both cylinder and disc from the acoustic era of 1895 to 1929. Numerous childrens albums and records of multi-colored shellac were marketing gimmicks of the day. These items are sitting atop a Victor Victrola Model 405. I'll be showing it uncovered in greater detail on another page.

One more phonograph is also shown on this page that was very much a marketing gimmick. Various phonographs had a larger than standard spindle on their turntables (machines such as: Harmony, United, Standard, Aretino, etc.). The strategy being, was to force the new owner to buy their records exclusively.    Pictured is a Harmony Disc Phonograph with a 3/4" spindle which of course played Harmony records with a 3/4" spindle hole. The machines were often modified by the owner (mine has a second turntable) to enable the playing of regular 78 rpm records.

In another photo you'll see in addition to several shelves of Edison cylinder records, another famous invention of Thomas Edison. Look to the top shelf where there are several early but still working Edison light bulbs. Taken for granted today this is truly Edison's most used invention.
