By the One and Only World's Greatest Drawer

Welcome to the Season 3 guide for Sonic X! I had to skip around when doing the summaries, mainly because I only own some of the episodes on DVD, so I did those first. Ironically , the third season never aired in Japan but aired everywhere else. That's why the Japanese names aren't listed, as these episodes never came out in Japan. I started with "The Cosmo Conspiracy" and went on to the end from there at first, but about six months later, I came back and got to work on this section after I finally got around to buying the whole third season.

This contains reviews for episodes 53-64.

Episode 53: A Cosmic Call (English)
The Messenger from the Meteor Shower (Japanese). I've also seen it translated as "A Messenger from a Meteor Shower" but the former is used more, not to mention I think it sounds much cooler. Actually, I've even seen another version: "A Messenger from Meteoric Shower" which may just be a mistranslation. Considering the entire third season never aired in Japan, I wonder how there are even Japanese names at all.
The Messenger From Space (French) Overall, most the names here center around the same theme; still I think I like the English name best here; good use of alliteration and it's far less wordy.
Premiered: September 10, 2005
Summary: All is slient in outer space. Of course, this doesn't last long; in fact, it only lasts 12 seconds (I counted) before we see what's really going on. Apparently, Sonic is in super form and is fighting a robotic-looking creature, though I have a pretty strong hunch this isn't one of Eggman's. Anyways, the robot demands that Sonic hand over the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic, with an expression that says "And what if I say no?", uses Chaos Control and sends the Chaos Emeralds out into space. Sonic then keels over and plumments head-first toward the planet. In the background, a number of glowing eyes surround Dark Oak; a nice effect, but unnecessary, nonetheless. The robot orders another robot to take something called the "Planet Egg". The scene then cuts to Amy, Tails (whose voice seems a bit lower in this scene), and Cream, who are back on Mobius (I will call Sonic's home planet Mobius in all future reviews) watching a meteor shower. Just as the meteors shower down even faster than before, and one even goes right over their head, in response to Cream's comical (and excellently timed) remark, "If I didn't know better, I'd say that meteor was heading straight toward us!" Still, I think it (the meteor going over their heads moment) felt sort of forced. The three go to see what happened, and find a young girl who looks rather like the Pokemon Kirlia on the ground, next to a crashed space ship. They decide to bring her to Cream's house. About 4-5 days later (estimating by what Eggman says about ten seconds later) Sonic wakes up (with nice music accompaniying this) to find himself in Eggman's latest base. Eggman greets him, explaining that he "just happened to" find Sonic washed up on the beach while he was jogging (Eggman of course, not Sonic!). As Bukkon offers him a cup of hot chocolate, Sonic runs out, spilling hot chocolate all over him. In a vent above the room, Rouge has heard the whole thing. Back at Cream's house, the young girl who looks something like a Kirlia is having a nightmare reminescent of what Shadow went through on his last moments on the ARK. In her dream, she hears a voice say, "Cosmo, run away!" Soon after, she wakes up too see Cream, Tails, Amy, and Vanilla around her beside. Cream asks Cosmo her name, but Cosmo says she cannot tell it yet and explains that she is looking for Sonic the Hedgehog. Amy, thinking that Cosmo is after Sonic as a girlfriend; despite Cosmo being (or at least appearing) much younger than him, accuses Cosmo of trying to move in on Sonic. Cosmo simply gives her a blank stare (with excellent accompanying music; now if only there had been some blinks to set an effect to). They then introduce themselves, and I think this is the first time in the show where Amy's full name is mentioned. A loud noise outside of the window tells them that the robot that other robot Sonic battled in space ordered to come down and take the Planet Egg is in action. Cosmo mentions that it is a Metarex. On Angel Island, Knuckles wakes up to see that the aforementioned Metarex has landed in a forest on the island (how Tails and Co. managed to hear it the is beyond me; more on that in the review section). Knuckles literally leaps into action and begins to fight the robot. His punches don't even leave a scratch. Tails then flies in at the exact moment the situation looks dire for Knuckles (more on that later). Tails notices his attacks are useless, and Cosmo informs him more on the Metarex. Just then, Sonic appears and attacks the Metarex, knocking it to the ground (more on that later as well). On Chris' planet, Chris is working in a lab and has finished some adustments on the portal that Chuck had used to send Sonic and friends back in the first place. As he reminesces on his last encounter with Sonic, a picture of him and Sonic, Tails and Amy gets blown dowm from the windowsill to the floor and shatters (more on that later). This only fuels Chris' desire to visit Mobius. Speaking of which, Sonic and pals are still engaged in battle with the Metarex. As Tails accurately remarks, "No matter how hard we hit that thing, it keeps going!"...apparently not for Sonic. He seems to be knocking it down with every blow of his. Knuckles tells Sonic he should use the Chaos Emeralds. I'll post the entire conversation here.
Knuckles: You'll have to use the Chaos Emeralds to stop this thing. I'll distract him with a frontal attack so you can move in and finish it off.
Sonic: I'd like to, but I don't have the Chaos Emeralds with me right now.
Knuckles: Where are they?
Sonic: Well, I kinda got into this fight in space. And the bad guy was going to take them from me. So I sent them away.
Knuckles:*beginning to get irritated* You finally had all the Chaos Emeralds together and you threw them away?
Sonic:*smugly* Exactly.
Knuckles:*near-throttles him* Are you crazy?!? What are we going to do?!(great acting here by Dan Green-Knuckles' VA, by the way) . Nearby, a light blue light is emitted from the ground. As the ground breaks, a Metarex appears, clutching a small crystal with what appears to be a galaxy inside. Cosmo explains that it is a Planet Egg. Once the Planet Egg is removed, the nearby greenery begins to die off. Captain Obv...I mean Cosmo explains that once the Planet Egg is removed, the planet will eventually die (though she explained it much more poetically than I did). The Metarex then leaves. Sonic, Knuckles and Tails and Cosmo in the X-Tornado try to pursue it, but they have no chance at catching it. It's already entered space. Unlike in past episodes, the X-Tornado cannot enter space (more about that later; wow, there's been a lot of these lately!) Once Cosmo is on the ground, she introduces herself to Sonic and tells him why she's here. Tails then runs back to the group, telling them that the Master Emerald is glowing (it's implied this is due to Chaos Control). They arrive to find Chris, who has just arrived due to Chaos Control (which had good musical/sound effects, by the way), and appears exactly as he did in the first and second seasons.
Plot: Wow, this summary turned out many times longer than I thought it would! While the plot itself was done well, waaaaaaaaaaay too many parts had me thinking, to quote Dan Drazen, "Gee, what are the odds?" A few don't typically bother me, but when you get this many moments that are completely unbelievable (in a bad way), it gets ridiculous. And in the first episode of a new season, that's a really bad sign. 6/10 (I subtracted a point for unbelievability)
Effort: It seems 4kids have put much more effort into their dubbing here than TMS have into their producing. I suppose I can't fault them for the flaws mentioned in the Plot section. Similar to how a house built on a weak foundation will always be prone to collapsing; regardless of how sturdy the home itself is. The opening scene worked excellenty; and had very good music accompanying it, though Super Sonic's battle was a bit too unexplained, along with his sending off the Chaos Emeralds with Chaos Control-since when could he do that? (not 4kids' fault). The same goes for Eggman's "just happening" to find Sonic while out jogging (not 4kids' fault), Cosmo already knowing about Sonic (okay, that sort of needed to happen, so I can pardon that), Tails' flying in to help Knuckles at the exact moment he needed it (also not 4kids' fault), the picture of Sonic and friends being blown off the window (I also pardon that for being a good emotional metaphor), and Chris' ending up at the exact location Sonic and the others were at (must I even say it?). Still, there were many reedeeming bits of acting and music/SE, such as in the first scene in space, Sonic's fade from gold to blue, many of Chris' scenes, and many others mentioned in the summary. I especially liked how Chris' arrival was done, from the (Chris') first-person view (even when fainting) to his shock at finding himself as a kid again. 10/10
Effort 2: Cosmo, from her nightmare to her introduction into the series was the only factor that brought any Effort 2 into this episode. I'm looking forward to see what her presence may add to future episodes. 6.5/10

Episode 54: A Cosmic Crisis(English) *sigh*4kids did the same thing in the SA ark: made continuing puns off a newly-introduced character's name. Then it was Chaos, now it's Cosmo. Hopefully they'll run out soon.
The Space Ship, Blue Typhoon! (Japanese)
Typhoon-Take-off (French) Heh, both the French and Japanese names have similar titles, and the English one is off the mark here.
Premiered: September 17, 2005
Summary: Even though I don't write these on a regular schedule, I'm pretty burnt out after last episode's summary (which turned out many times longer than I thought) and I'll catch myself a break here. Besides, there really isn't too much to note; it's much more fight-based than last episode. There's even a bit less to note since the whole part before the intro is exactly the same as the last scene in A Cosmic Call. Soon after Chris revives, Sonic passes out himself. Back at Cream's home, Cosmo explains for what must be at least the 2nd or 3rd time what the consequences of removing the Planet Egg are. Despite this, we're still not seeing a bit of them on Mobius. She then tells them that she is the only survivor of her group. Knuckles then accuses her of being a Metarex. Despite logic, that could actually make some sense; it'd cetrainly explain why she was the only one who survived. Of course, logic wins out and she obviously is not part of the Metarex. The group then decides to find the Chaos Emeralds and save the galaxy. Much to their advantage, Tails has just finished his latest invention: a massive spaceship called the Blue Typhoon. Don't even tell me what the odds are. Since the Blue Typhoon requires a Chaos Emerald or more to power it, Chris gets an idea of what to use instead. However, Knuckles isn't too pleased. He rushes in (I love his expression here) and demands that the Master Emerald be returned to Angel Island. The girls then gang up on him, and Knuckles calls in Sonic to help him. He then says to Knuckles (great line coming up) "I'd like to, but I don't get involved in fights I can't win!" Meanwhile, another Metarex (or maybe it's the same one with an upgrade; I can't really tell) returns to do what removing the Planet Egg should've done. A six-or-seven minute fight ensues (of which nothing noteworthy happens in), and Tails decides to test out the Blue Typhoon's best weapon, the Sonic Power Cannon. This requires Sonic to be in it (he is the projectile), so Cream goes to get him (in what is one of the only moments in the show where she is shown flying) and see if it works. And (to coin a phrase from Captain Underpants) To Make a Long Story Short: It did. Soon after the Blue Typhoon takes off, Sonic finds the bug Eggman implanted on his head (though he never puts two and two together and finds out how it got there; I guess I wouldn't have, either). Since Dr. Eggman had heard their plan, he goes into space as well. Rouge (who was listening in on HIM) goes as well.
Plot: I'm sure many people reading this have wondered why I refer to Sonic's planet as Mobius, despite it being unnamed in the show. In fact, I have anumber of theories on why it remains unnamed.
1. TMS simply didn't feel like naming it.
2. Because Sonic's planet was only referred to as Mobius in the American versions of the games, the name belongs to Sega of America and they couldn't get the rights to it. This is the same reason why Eggman was called Robotnik in the earlier American versions of the games: Sega of America couldn't get the rights to use the name "Dr. Eggman" from Sega of Japan due to copyright complications.
3. TMS simply didn't know the name (due to it only being in the American games/shows), and because of this, 4kids didn't either. Now onto the actual review. Though this episode had its share of moments that seemed far too unlikely (read last episode's review for more info), it was nowhere near as bad as last episode's. In compensation, the plot overall wasn't as good as last episode's. It was pretty much just more and the same. 6/10
Effort:I was very impressed with how this episode was handled overall. While it wasn't anywhere near as so as A Cosmic Call, I was still pleased, and hope 4kids keep up this type of work ethic in all their future episodes. 8/10
Effort 2: There wasn't anything noteworthy here, though I guess Chris' predicament could count. 6/10

Episode 55: H2Whoa (English) Nice name. For some reason it makes me think of the Pokemon episode, "There's Snow Way Out!"
The Water Planet, Hydoo (Japanese)
The Arid Planet (French) It's anything but that...though I guess I shouldn't spoil it for you readers.
Premiered: September 24, 2005
Summary: The episode opens back on Earth with Chris' parents, Chris' friends, and Chuck. They then discover that while they can't go in, they can send items through (note this for later). After the theme song, the focus shifts back to Sonic and friends. Knuckles says that a Chaos Emerald has been detected on Planet (Secco?) (Note: I have no idea how to spell it; it's pronounced "secco", similar to the company that makes those disgusting candy wafers that taste like chalk, but it could be spelled "Secko" or "Seco". I'm going with Secco, it looks the best out of them). Sonic then consults a guidebook, which says the planet is "dry as a bone". I never understood that simile. Still, it's better than "happy as a clam". Apparently his guidebook is seriously out of date. Or Secco's experiencing its flood season. Either way, the planet's practically an ocean. Everyone sets out by submarine to find the Chaos Emerald-and what the heck happened. Well, everyone but Sonic. His hydrophobia's gotten the better of him. Chris decides to stay behind with Sonic, though they go out a bit later then everyone else). The girls and Knuckles land on the beach and begin searching for the Chaos Emerald, while Sonic and Chris appear in front of what looks like a cross between an office building and a Metarex base. They then run into a group of fish Metarex; which in my opinion look a tiny bit like the NiGHTS boss Giriana (awesome boss, by the way). Anyways, Chris takes this chance to show off his karate skills to Sonic. It seems he hasn't adusted to his 12-year-old proportions yet, because his attacks land a good three inches short. The Metarex-fish attack the two, and now Chris takes Sonic's advice and goes back in the submarine. When Sonic finally realizes he should've left too, he gets thrown into the water, then fished out immediately after by another Metarex. Why they just didn't drown him in the first place is beyond me. Chris tells Amy and Tails about Sonic's crisis, and they go to rescue him. Rubbing it in, much? Chris, now alone on the Typhoon, goes into an angst period and begins to question his usefulness to Sonic and friends. He begins to wonder if he's only a burden for them and starts to even consider that he should go back. Then, Chris begins to think about his own abilities, and all that he learned in the six years before he was reunited with Sonic and friends. Sadly, we cut from the only truly engaging part of the episode to Amy's rescue. She singlehandedly smashes her way through the fish Metarex and rescues Sonic, who's being used as sharkbait. Amy doesn't think to cut him loose from the rod, and drags him along as she races back to find Tails. Mid-flight, the rope gets cut by a harpoon, and Sonic plummets into the water with an excellent accompanying line: "Next time you want to save me; DON'T!" Chris, who has realized his worth, conveniently flies into the fray and gives Sonic a strange pair of shoes resembling Shadow's air shoes that allow Sonic to run on water. Sonic smashes through the attacking Metarex and finds the Planet Egg. The water begins to recede, revealing a desert. The girls and Knuckles find the Chaos Emerald and the episode ends.
Plot: This is a review from TV.com that I closely agree with. For the most part, very few people take their reviewing seriously there, but here's a truly commendable review by a like-minded reviewer. I occasionally write reviews there as well (my username is wave_ts).
"Planet Hydoo, or: How to destroy a Sonic X Season which began pretty well
Season 2 takes a turn for the worst, when the first planet that Sonic & the gang visit on their quest leads them into a stupid and poorly built adventure. It seems like the scenarits absolutely wanted to highlight Sonic's fear of water, one way or another. The visual effects are very mixed. For most of the episode, the water is in 3-D and it's very well conceived. But the show started by showing an ocean composed of bars...
The only winner in this show is Chris. While he acted as a bullet in the first season, he has grown more mature during the last six years and he's able to think about his role and his capacities. This is well welcomed and Chris begins to be an interesting character. His new invention at the end of the episode shows that Tails isn't the only big brain on the Typhoon.
Otherwise, the rest is very poor. There are so many ridiculous moments that the blindest watchers could find what doesn't stick there. For example, the Blue Typhoon is more deeply explored, but there is so much stuff aboard that we could ask ourselves if it's not exaggerated. Also, how could Amy break the rod which holds Sonic prisoner with one hand? It must be ten feet tall and is as thick as a football post on all of his length.
And I'm not finished. The worst of all: how could Sonic plunge into the water all tied up and to come out free without any trace of rope?
Other than Chris' philosophic moments, this episode is bad. I haven't got any other words to describe it. (3.0)"-mattlefebvre20
Anyways, I agree with much of what he said. While I think it was a nice idea to have Sonic's hydrophobia built upon, as well as Chris' self-esteem issues, overall it was a bland episode, not to mention the ending felt too...random, and suffered from the same problem A Cosmic Call did. 5.5/10
Effort: The water effects were excellently done, as was much of the acting and dialogue. In fact, I spotted no acting, dialogue or visual problems this episode. Nearly all the problems were in the writing, which, while fairly uninteresting, felt quite rushed for the last 2 or 3 minutes. 7/10
Effort 2: This episode touches upon Chris' insecurities more than most the first and second seasons did put together! Also, in a much less direct way, it deals with Sonic facing his fears, and his own insecurities. When a show delves that deep into a character, or in this case, two character's inner selves, it truly deserves commendation. It's a shame these moments were so short, though. 9/10

Episode 56: An Enemy in Need (English)
Eggman Enters the War (Japanese)
Robotnik Goes to War (French) Yeah, it's essentially the same as the Japanese title, though I'm surprised the French dubbers still haven't retconned Robotnik to Eggman.
Premiered: October 1, 2005
Summary: Because Sonic and friends saved Secco, a celebration is thrown. In fact, they are too, onto a boat and bounced up and down. Elsewhere, Eggman is planning to steal the Chaos Emerald from Knuckles (how he knew Knuckles even had it is beyond me), and enlists help from Decoe, Bocoe and Bukkon. Decoe and Bocoe fake headaches, to which Eggman replies,"So, you have headaches? Guess the doctor's going to have to operate!" (which was a great line with great animation accompanying it before and after). Bukkon slips out while Eggman chases Decoe and Bocoe around with a hammer, only to run into Rouge, who has had suffered ANOTHER cleavage-edit. She then pulls out a locket of Bukkon's and threatens to tell who his crush is. Bukkon then promises to do whatever she says to keep the secret from getting out. Knuckles, who was left out of the celebration, runs into Eggman, who is "stranded" out in the desert. He then explains to Knuckles if he ever gets off Secco, he'll never do anything evil again (though the actual dialogue used is excellent). Of course, he says to fix his ship, he needs Knuckles' Chaos Emerald. Knuckles agrees (somewhat reluctantly) and takes the Emerald back from Sonic, who literally won't let him leave without a fight. Cosmo is the only one worried; everyone else could care less. When Cosmo hears Amy reply so nonchalantly, she asks to herself "I just don't understand these creatures." From the instant she said that, I could come up with a good 15 situations that quote could be applied to. Either way, it was an excellent line. Eggman takes matters into his own hands and crawls toward the Chaos Emerald, but Bukkon, in typical Bukkon-style, comes very close to blowing his cover. Eggman sneaks closer, before being noticed by Chris, Amy and the others. Apparently Bukkon did blow his cover. When Amy tries to attack Eggman, Knuckles heaves him out of the way. Despite Knuckles' act of kindness, Eggman activates a robot that captures Cosmo. I guess some people don't understand the concept of gratitude. Eggman tells Sonic and friends to give him the Chaos Emerald, or he'll crush Cosmo. While Sonic and the others stand around, Rouge takes the opportunity to steal the Emerald, though a randomly-appearing frog Metarex takes it from her at the last second. Eggman lets go of Cosmo, and starts fighting the Metarex. Chris gets an idea, and uses the boat from the beginning of the episode and the Planet Egg to lure the Metarex away. Tails uses this opportunity to fire the Sonic Power Cannon and destroy the Metarex. Upon Chris' return, the "Planet Egg" turns out to be a beach ball. Back at the Blue Typhoon, Knuckles apologizes for his actions, and Cosmo says (another excellent line from her this ep) that Knuckles has a kind heart and wants to believe there is good in everyone. Sonic then replies (with another great line) "That's a nice way of putting it, but it doesn't change the fact you're still a sucker!"
Plot: While a very similar idea was used in Episode 5 "Cracking Knuckles", I still think this episode had much more to it than the aforementioned one. Besides from revolving around the Sonic-Knuckles argument, it also brings in two new plot points: Rouge's control over Bukkon and a possible Knuckles-Cosmo romance (which I will say more about under Effort 2), and blends them together perfectly. 8.5/10
Effort: The dialogue in this episode was excellent in many scenes, as was the acting. As I mentioned before, all the plot points are blended together very smoothly as well. My only problem was a number of misdraws for the first two or three minutes of Knuckles (his face looked very flattened out). That's my only complaint. 9/10
Effort 2:Despite being a mostly action episode, there were a fair amount of moments where Effort 2 shone, such as the ending scene, some of the middle, and Rouge's blackmailing of Bukkon. I especially liked the brief moment where Knuckles and Cosmo held hands and looked into eachother's eyes, one of the less subtle implications of their (possible) budding romance. There were some others, but there were tucked into the action scenes, and typically were very short. While I'm not sure that's such a good pairing, and Knuckles is probably much older than Cosmo (whose age is unknown, but she can't be much older than Tails). 8.5/10

Episode 57: A Chilling Discovery (English)
The Battle of the Ice Palace (Japanese)
Fight at the Ice Palace (French) Once again, the French name is almost identical to the Japanese title, though it's even more so here than with "An Enemy in Need".
Premiered: October 8, 2005
Summary: Chris installs a Chaos Emerald Detector into the Blue Typhoon. With it, he soon locates another Chaos Emerald on a planet called "Breezy". All I can say is, at least it wasn't called "Freezy". Eggman, using a cool new addition of his called the Egg Driver, too, warps to Breezy as well. On Breezy, Sonic and the others conclude by the severe wintry conditions that the Metarex have been here. When Sonic steps out of the Typhoon, he immediatly sinks through a good 5 or 6 feet of snow. Chris though, has prepared yet another type of shoe for Sonic: snowshoes. Cosmo puts her (ear?) to a tree and listens for its life force. Despite the cold, the tree is still partially alive. The X-Tornado arrives at the Ice Palace, but surprise, surprise, it's guarded by the Metarex. The Metallix cause an avalanche, which probably isn't the best way to take out foes in the air, but the X-Tornado swerves out of the way. Sonic and Knuckles get out of the plane to get into the Ice Palace. Eventually they do, where they find a conviently-placed Chaos Emerald in an ice pillar. Sonic's spin attacks are useless, and even Knuckles can't break through. Suddenly, a Metarex appears in the pillar and takes the Emerald. Cosmo, who is in the X-Tornado with Tails, accidentally leans against the laser button, cutting off an arm of a Metarex. The two then discover that their lasers melt the(se) Metarex, though why weren't they firing in the first place? After Sonic is fired out of the Sonic Power Cannon, he hits right on target and a Planet Egg appears. Once it sinks into the ground, small shoots start popping up and the snow is melting. Just as Knuckles finds the Chaos Emerald, Rouge swipes it (almost literally) from under his nose and flies off. Later on the Blue Typhoon, it's revealed that the Chaos Emerald is a fake, and in an excellently-overlapped scene, Rouge finds out shortly after.
Plot: Yes, I admit the above summary was rather sparse, but to be honest, there wasn't exactly many important parts to note. For the most part, it was just another action episode, though it lacks the heart of the last two. 6/10
Effort: While I have no complaints, I didn't pick up on anything exceptional, either. 5.5/10
Effort 2: See above. 5.5/10

Episode 58: Desperately Seeking Sonic (English) Once again, 4kids make references to things no one under the age of 20 or so would get. They did the same with Episode (34?)'s name: Shadow Knows, which I found out is a reference to an off-the-air talk show. This one came from the movie "Desperately Seeking Susan", which I heard from Barbra and later confirmed this when I saw it on Sonic X Uncensored.
Young Girl's Jungle Trap (Japanese) Don't ask how there keep being Japanese names for these episodes since they never aired in Japan...
Trap in the Jungle (French)
Premiered: October 15, 2005
Summary: Aboard the Blue Typhoon, the crew runs into two Metarex: one typical looking one, and one looking something like a baboon. Both have stolen the Planet Egg from a nearby planet. Tails fires Sonic out of the Sonic Power Cannon. Fortunately, he hits the Metarex and takes the Planet Egg. Unfortunately, he gets caught in the planet's gravity field (presumably) and "falls" toward the planet. Fortunately, Sonic wakes up to find a Chaos Emerald near him. Unfortunately, so are Eggman and his robots. Fortunately, they're asleep. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to Sonic, the baboon Metarex fell down to the planet as well and has the Planet Egg. Fortunately, I'm giving up this format because it's getting to be as irritating to me as it is to you, probably. Back at the Typhoon, Tails and Knuckles are getting into the X-Tornado when Amy barges in. She wants to go with them, but Tails tells her she needs to stay and protect the ship. Knuckles, being the candid (often to a fault) one, says it to her straight that they don't want her to get in the way. Amy is very annoyed with this, and leaves to find Sonic herself. Cosmo decides to go with her to find the Planet Egg, and Cream doesn't want to be left alone, so she and Cheese come along. In the jungle, Cosmo finds the Planet Egg in the middle of a clearing. Of course, it didn't just happen to be there, and the girls are caught in a net. The baboon Metarex appears and later moves them to a cage. Amy, who at this point hasn't had the best of days, completely loses it and smashes the cage to pieces. Soon after, they experience a bit of deja vu: once again, the Planet Egg is laying smack-dab in the middle of a clearing, and once again, Cosmo tries to take it and gets them all trapped. This time they decide to fight back, though. Meanwhile, Tails and Knuckles find Sonic. Soon after, Dr. Eggman arrives and takes the Chaos Emerald from them. The three prepare to fight, and the girls burst in soon after with the baboon Metarex on their tail(s?). Eggman uses his latest mech to capture everyone (Metarex included).Cosmo, demonstrating a new ability of hers, uses the power of the Planet Egg to cause huge vines to entwine everyone and everything, sending them out of the frying pan and into the fire. Chris, who has had a surprisingly small part this episode, flies in and helps free Sonic. Sonic, using what appear to be his Soap Shoes from SA2(*gag*product placement) and grinds down the vines to attack Eggman. In the excitement, he (well, there's no other way of saying it) leaves them hanging. Luckily for them, he remembers to cut them free eventually. The Planet Egg sinks back into the ground, and Sonic and friends return to the Blue Typhoon.
Plot: Personally, I'm glad to see the girls get more of a spotlight, especially Cream, who in my opinion, is shockingly underused. I've always though Amy was rather underappreciated as well, and it's good to see Cosmo put to some use aside from dishing out exposition. While there were a few moments that felt a bit forced, such as Cosmo's sudden ability to link with the Planet Egg, the girls falling for the same trap twice, and some of the gags used. Either way, it was a well-balanced episode, though nothing spectacular. 7/10
Effort: I've noticed 4kids use quite a bit of new music in this episode, most of which does not appear again. Not that they didn't have enough music already, but I'm impressed they'd compose a few new tunes for one simple episode. I have no problems visually or in terms of dialogue or acting as well. 8/10
Effort 2: As with last episode, there's nothing to note here. Besides, there was little opportunity for it, anyways. 5.5/10

Episode 59: Galactic Gumshoes (English)
Chaotix go into Space (Japanese)
A Detective in Space (French) No, that's not a mistranslation, either.
Premiered: October 22, 2005
Summary: Back on "Earth", Chris' friends and family find a way to teleport objects to Mobius. Vanilla, who is near the Master Emerald for some reason, "discovers" this stuff much in the way an early cartoon character would an anvil. She then decides to call the Chaotix. At the Chaotix office, Charmy is waken by the sound of the phone ringing. Assuming the call's for Vector, he decides to wake him up-by dropping the phone on his head. Vector, who isn't too pleased by this, gets angry at Charmy, who begins crying. Okay, crying is putting it mildly. There's practically waterfalls coming out of his eyes. Vector tells him to calm down, and Charmy's tears are gone in a rather cute and well-acted "Okay." She's also worried about Cream, and asks Vector to check up on her at the same time. Vector, who appears to have a bit of a crush on Vanilla, eagerly accepts Vanilla's mission, but Espio brings him back to earth saying that they'd need a spaceship. Lucky for them, a spaceship falls right out the sky right near them. Under normal circumstances, I'd question this, but it works well for comic purposes. Aboard the Blue Typhoon, Knuckles and Sonic are playing chess together (something that seems rather uncharacteristic for either; Sonic's not one for sitting still, and Knuckles isn't the sort of guy who likes to think things through). Knuckles is taking a very long time to move, so Sonic decides to take a quick walk. Just as Sonic leaves, Knuckles finally makes his move, only to realize Sonic isn't there. He runs outside the ship to find that Sonic has fallen into space. Inside the ship, Tails sees another ship on radar, and jumps to the conclusion that it must be a Metarex. As the Chaotix pull up to the Blue Typhoon, Vector gets out and casually strolls in. Tails and the others, with an assortment of random items to be used as weapons, lie in wait behind the door. The instant he opens the door, they jump on him. Later, Espio attempts to go in, using his invisibility to sneak inside. Amy, who is painting the walls of the Typhoon, accidentally splatters some paint on him, blowing his cover. He also gets beaten up and thrown off the Blue Typhoon. Charmy then tries next. He manages to get through no problem, until he runs into Tails and the crew. We see he's in some random junk posing as samurai armor, before they jump him as well. After that, they decide to distance themselves from the Blue Typhoon, but Tails decides to pursue them. At this point, he realizes it wasn't an enemy ship. They all apologize to the Chaotix, and help them carry all the supplies from "Earth". Cream, whose panties show quite a bit here (and I really do mean quite a bit) offers the Chaotix some of her latest dish: Strawberry Cream Cake. While they enjoy their dessert, Vector brings up Vanilla's other goal: to check on Cream. Much to the other member's chagrin, he comically misinterprets this as "bring Cream home". Vector and Epsio argue, while Charmy commentates. Later, the Chaotix say their goodbyes, while Vector sneaks up and Cream and puts a bag over her. They hastily leave, with Cream (and apparently Cheese) in tow. It's not until much later Amy notices that Cream and Cheese are gone. It seems Cosmo is, too. Using a rocket pack, Knuckles manages to find Sonic and bring him back to the Typhoon. Amy then tells him that Vector kidnapped Cream, so he sets off to find the Chaotix. After a two-or-so minute long chase, they finally catch the Chaotix's ship. Sonic gets into a quick fight with Vector. With Cream's help, an agreement is settled, and Cream heads back to the Blue Typhoon, but not without Charmy taking a picture of her to send to Vanilla. Aboard Eggman's ship (!) Rouge is sneaking around, when she finds a secret room with a capsule in it. Could it be...?
Plot: While some parts felt too gratuitous, such as Vector accidentally kidnapping Cosmo as well, and everyone taking so long to realize Cream is gone, overall it was a well-composed episode with many memorable moments. 10/10
Effort: As I mentioned under Plot, this was an excellently-made episode with many exceptional scenes, both in action and comic timing. I only have one complaint with this episode. In a couple of scenes, Cream's panties stick out to a ridiculous extent. You want to know how ridiculous? Picture Toadette and see if that gives you any ideas. Not that I'm one of those people who complains about things such as this being "inappropiate" for a kid's show or anything, mind you; I could care less whether it got dubbed out or not, I just think it looked ridiculous. 9.5/10
Effort 2: Watching this episode always gives me a bout of nostalgia. It was the first Sonic X episode I ever saw, and what got me into watching it (and later writing these reviews) in the first place. I remember when flipping through channels I saw the last three minutes or so, and instantly got hooked. Later, I became a weekly watcher, and with much help from Tivo, got the chance to watch each one more than once. Anyways, back to the normal review. Aside from a bit of Cream and Vanilla's relation showing, and a potential Vanilla-Vector romance in the air, there was'nt really much to note. 8/10 (9/10 for me, 7/10 for anyone else)

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCMENT: From this point on, I'm going to do these reviews based how how interested I am on reviewing them. Eventually, every episode will have been reviewed, but this is taking way too long going in direct order all the way through.

Episode 60: Trick Sand (English) Despite the fact that the "quick sand" (which isn't exactly that) appears around 12 minutes into the episode...
The Return of Shadow (Japanese) While I disliked the English name for having little to do with the actual episode and being a bit of a spoiler, this absolutely takes the cake as the worst name. Talk about a huge spoiler!
The Return of Shadow (French) Oh my gosh! The French and Japanese names are exactly alike!
Premiered: October 29, 2005 (Right near Halloween; how fitting)
Chris is in the middle of an odd dream. First he dreams he sees Shadow in the facets of the red Chaos Emerald, before having a flashback to his arguement with Shadow on the ARK. He then flashes back some more to when Sonic and Shadow stopped the ARK from crashing into his planet (though this scene is completely redone; Amy and Cream don't speak at all, and Tails and Eggman sound different). He is awakened by Tails, who tells him he's detected another Emerald. Inside Eggman's ship (while it's named much later in the show, I'll refer to it as the Egg Crimson from now on), Rouge returns to the room she was in last episode to take the Chaos Emerald powering the capsule. In a bit of foreshadowing, she peeks into the capsule to find...Shadow? Yes, believe it or not, he's in cold sleep for the second time in his life. When she reaches for it, an alarm goes off, and Eggman and his robots head down to see what all the commotion's about. The scene changes to the Blue Typhoon crew, who have gone to search for the Emerald;Knuckles goes with Sonic and Amy, much to the latter's distaste, while Cosmo and Chris explore what looks like a crashed satellite, while Cream and Tails...well...I don't know what they do, I guess they just hang around. Sonic, Amy and Knuckles look around the castle, and while they're at it sport some very well-written dialogue. After a number of pseudo-traps, they finally put two and two together and realize they need to get out. Sonic finds out the wall isn't even solid, and they leap through. Easy enough. While exploring the satellite, Cosmo literally stumbles upon a recording explaining what had happened. To sum it up: Some silvery creature that looks like a mix between a lion and a mouse explains that the Metarex attacked, and everything was destroyed. As they exit, Cosmo notes that Chris seems "like he's in another world." He then replies, "No, just thinking about one," and gives us a dose of even MORE foreshadowing. As Sonic, Amy and Knuckles run away from the castle, it turns into a (pond?) of (goo?) and pulls Sonic in. Well, it comes close, but Chris fends it off. Sonic tries to counter-attack, but it turns into a steel wall. Chris tries, but fails as well. Aboard the Egg Crimson, Shadow wakes up. He uses the red Chaos Emerald in the stasis machine to teleport off. And within the next 3-4 minutes, the episode goes completely downhill, to the point that I have no idea what the heck happened. I'll post my theories.
1. Tails fires from the Blue Typhoon, and the laser(s), one being an actual laser and the other being a tractor beam of sorts. The former destroys the Metarex and the latter warps Chris to the roof. Shadow then appears on the spire of the castle, having used Chaos Control to take both Emeralds.
2. Chris uses the X-Tornado itself as a weapon, both firing and crashing it into the Metarex. That would explain why he's semiconcious when he's flung onto the roof. Shadow then takes the Chaos Emerald that landed with Chris on the roof.
3. Shadow (using Chaos Control) destroyed the Metarex and saved Chris all in one smooth move and set him on the roof. During this he took the Chaos Emerald.
Regardless, Shadow appears on the spire of the castle, with the two Chaos Emeralds floating around him, and soon teleports off. As soon as he arrives back on the Egg Crimson, he passes out, both Chaos Emeralds in hand.
Plot: GAH! Enough with the foreshadowing! How many hints (put mildly) need to be dropped to give people the idea Shadow's coming back?! I don't mind it normally; I just think the last scene in Galactic Gumshoes was enough of a tip-off, and should've been left at that. Sorry to disappoint you anti-4kids folks out there, but this was all TMS' fault. 4kids didn't do anything, aside from a couple puns ("I see you've found my shadowy little secret!"). Otherwise, the episode was pretty good, but they really should've toned down the foreshadowing. Also, the ending completely fell apart. I know about ambiguous endings and all that, but this was just plain confusing! 6/10
Effort: Even though it was irritating, I really can't fault TMS or 4kids effortwise for their (over)implication that Shadow was back. The animation and special effects were excellent, especially with the eye on the ceiling and the chandelier in the castle. The lion-mouse thing was very well-designed for an extra. Too bad about the ending, though. Talk about a letdown. 7/10
Effort 2: Once again, we get the inklings of a Knuckles-Amy relationship, similar to in Missile Wrist Rampage, but much more so here. I actually wouldn't mind seeing them as a couple, but for impartiality's sake, I'll rate on other details concerning that. It could make for a pretty interesting plot point in future episodes, having a love-hate relation between those two. 8/10

Episode 61: Ship of Doom (English) Generally when something has "doom" in the title, it means it's either cliche or lame. I'll see how things go with this episode and decide for myself.
N/A (Japanese) From now on, when there is no Japanese title, I'll just leave it out.
The Vessel of Evil (French)

Summary:

Episode 62: An Underground Odyssey (English)
The Underground Secret (French)
Premiered: November 12, 2005
Summary:

Episode 63: Station Break-In (English) It's shown on the DVD as "Station Break-Up" but I think that was an error on 4kid's part. Either way "Station Break-In" makes much more sense.
The Metarex Base (French) I've also heard it as "The Base of the Metarex", but later Rhiannon corrected it and explained that was the literal translation. What would we do without bilinguals?
Premiered: November 19, 2005 (My 12th birthday, and my first sleepover!) The shout-outs were playing that day, too! (For those of you who don't watch 4kids TV on TV, Shout-Outs are little messages written by watchers that are displayed at the bottom of the screen in a similar style to severe weather warnings)
Summary: The episode begins outside of a large Metarex base, when Eggman locates the last two Chaos Emeralds. You guessed it; they're located in the Metarex's base. Soon after, the Blue Typhoon flies in and has the same question: How are they supposed to get the Chaos Emeralds? Eggman then tells them that they can get in with Shadow's Chaos Control. As Decoe and Bocoe talk amongst themselves, we get treated to another cool little pan-in on Eggman as he thinks in response to Rouge's comment "Our side?! Don't make me laugh! If you ever get ahold of those Emeralds, you'll skip ship in a flash!". Speaking of whom, he resumes telling Sonic and the gang his plan: The first group will head for the computer that controls the security system and shut it down. Then the rest of them will sneak into the base undetected. Sonic agrees to the plan, but Knuckles is still suspicious. Eggman states it's finders-keepers; whoever finds the Chaos Emeralds will keep both. He selects Shadow and Rouge to go in first, much to the latter's shock. She objects, and another pan-in reveals her suspicion that Eggman's sending her in on the entry team so she can't get to the Chaos Emeralds first. Rouge doesn't voice her suspicions, though, and "gladly" accepts Eggman's order. Meanwhile, the Blue Typhoon crew is having a much harder time choosing members to go. Amy says she doesn't want to go because because she doesn't like Rouge and Shadow *thumbs nose at Shadamy fans*. Knuckles refuses for a similar reason. Cream suggests they draw names from a hat, Chris bravely volunteers. Aboard the Egg Crimson, Chris gives Shadow his Power Rings (or whatever they're called) one of which Chris made to match the other; asymmetrical bracelets are tacky, you know. Apparently Chris doesn't even know what they're called, as in "I made an extra one of these to go with the one you had back on Space Colony ARK). This sparks a bit of interest in Shadow, and he remembers one belonged to him. Chris flashes back too, to the moment where Sonic gave him it (in Episode 38-Showdown in Space). After some more dialogue, Shadow takes the Power Rings back, and Chaos Controls Chris and Rouge into the base. Aboard the Blue Typhoon, Eggman comes in to...to...I honestly don't know why, but either way it helps the plot along. He takes a quick look around, while Decoe and Bocoe place some sort of (bomb?) under each ship. Inside the Metarex base, Chris, Shadow and Rouge are (well, I would say safe and sound, but considering how paradoxical that would be, I won't). Rouge plots her next move to shake the boys off so she can look for the Chaos Emeralds. She suggests they split up, and almost immediately, Shadow shoots it down. She realizes amnesia hasn't made Shadow any dumber, and seeks out another way. Rouge then sets the topic to their last escapade (Ep. 35-Sonic's Big Break) and they indulge in a bit of nostalgia. With the mood set, she mentions Maria "in passing", which sends Shadow to his knees with grief for his lost love. While Chris is comforting him (At least I think that's what he's doing), Rouge flies off. She does pretty well for herself too, dodging a number of Metarex before one catches her. Shadow, having caught up, defeats it and the alarm goes off. How it didn't go off earlier is beyond me. Chris finds a control room nearby, and they manage to shut it off together. Sonic, Knuckles, Amy and Cosmo take off, with Eggman following suit. Things go smoothly at first (though certainly not literally; Knuckles and Cosmo look about ready to throw up), until Eggman pulls a lever on a joystick that causes Amy's ship to go haywire. Decoe and Bocoe take their Chaos Emeralds and take off as the girls' ship ceases movement. Along a vertical hallway, Eggman uses a similar ploy on Sonic's ship. Sonic notices Eggman's controller, as Eggman messes around for a bit before sending Sonic and Knuckles plummeting. Knuckles gets an idea (!) and throws Sonic at the Eggmobile (yes, that is actually the canonical name for Eggman's little vehicle he rides around in; it's sometimes called the Egg Walker, too) who quickly reclaims the Chaos Emeralds Eggman took, and knocks it out of the air somehow. Luckily for Eggman, a mechanical arm on it grabs onto a pipe. They won't be safe for long though: Knuckles is right below them and would be more than happy to help them down. As Sonic leaps up to the next part, Amy and Cosmo break through the floor, the former immediately rushing to hug Sonic. As the come across the last Chaos Emerald (I might be mistaken, but I thought there were 2?), they find a giant Planet Egg powering the base. Moments later, Dark Oak appears, accompanied by an army of Metarex.
Plot What a cliffhanger! That was one of the many well-written parts in this episode, and it was an evenly-balanced episode as well. My only problem was the sudden break in Shadow's amnesia. How does he remember the ARK and Maria in the first place? Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed those moments, but TMS really need to think this stuff over. Actually, there is such thing as partial amnesia (where the amnesiac's memory either randomly goes on and off or they only have part of it), but I don't think that's what TMS had in mind. I was a bit worried it'd come off as a repeat of "Sonic's Big Break" (Episode 35); I couldn't have been more mistaken. 8.5/10
Effort However, one thing I was mistaken in was thinking I could skip around in my reviewing, do the episodes I liked best first, then go back and do the rest. How wrong I was. It throws the reader off, it throws the reviews off,and msot importantly it throws me off (as I can't make references or comparisons back to those episodes). The fact that the summary alone took almost three weeks (and most, even the ones much longer than this) took less than one, clearly is an omen I should do these in order. TMS/4kids-wise, there's nothing I can note that went wrong; the dialogue and acting were excellent, as was the art quality. 10/10
Effort 2 Despite this being an action-intensive episode, there's actually a good amount of heart here. What's better is, it's seamlessly incorporated into the action and doesn't mess up the pacing. Most notable was the scene between Shadow, Chris and Rouge, though it does beg the question: If Shadow has amnesia, how does he even remember Maria? (see above for more). And since every other section has something random in it, I might as well mention I'm submitting this summary to Tv.com, so if you see it there, don't report it or anything. 8.5/10

Episode 64: A Metarex Melee (English)
Sonic Vs. Shadow(French)
Premiered: November 26, 2005
Summary: Sonic and Dark Oak begin to fight, and the battle commences. Sonic attacks Dark Oak, but he disappears. It was only a hologram. Outside the fortress, an armada(presumably summoned for backup from Dark Oak) led by Red Pine is approaching. For some reason, the fleet begins attacking its own fortress, rather than the Blue Typhoon or the Egg Crimson. More surprising is that there are still Metarex inside. The giant Planet Egg gets swept up through a tube, and it's revealed that they have no use for the base without the Planet Egg. Shadow, Chris and Rouge are still running through the base, unaware of the true danger they're in, until Eggman gives them a brief heads-up through a walkie-talkie. For some reason, they don't use Chaos Control there, and continue further on. While they're doing this, Chris and Rouge try to convince Shadow that Eggman doesn't really care about him (which may or not be true) and only is using Shadow to get what he wants (which probably is true). After a bit more convincing, Shadow uses Chaos Control to warp Chris and Rouge back onto the Egg Crimson. After a few condescending words from Dr. Eggman, Chris uses a (flash bomb?) to distract them all and runs off with the Chaos Emeralds. Despite just leaving the fortress, Chris heads back there anyways. Shadow follows in hot pursuit, though how he gets onto the Metarex fortress without Chaos Control or a ship is beyond me. A few moments and a chase scene later, Chris finds Sonic, Amy and Cosmo grappling with the Metarex. As Shadow and Sonic both dive for the Chaos Emeralds, a golden light envelops them, nd they both go Super. Super Sonic and Super Shadow duke it out in the fortress, fighting each other rather than the Metarex. I don't know exactly why this happens, but a bizarre gravitational field forms around the base. Pehaps it's from Chaos Control; that's my best guess. The Supers continue to fight outside the base. Shadow demands that Sonic give him the Chaos Emeralds, to which Sonic refuses, saying Eggman's just using him to get his dirty work done. Safe bet there. They continue to fight until Super Shadow notices the Egg Crimson is being sucked into it. He puts the fight on hold, dives in and uses Chaos Control to warp them out. Sonic and the others escape too, using the Master Emerald to power it. However, the Chaos Emeralds have vanished again, and they have to start all over...
Plot: My main problem with this episode was that it had a number of excellent ideas, nearly all of which were badly-timed. And unlike "Defective Detectives" (episode 39), this time 4kids are innocent of all charges. One moment in particular that stuck out was the duel between Super Sonic and Super Shadow. C'mon, admit that'd make for an awesome boss battle! Instead, it's reduced to a barely-significant plot point and a fan-service one at that. In general, there were far too many plot points crammed into a 22-minute period. 7/10
EffortAside from the above-mentioned problems, there weren't many other glaring mistakes to point out. Except for major one. There were an UNBELIEVEABLE amount of misdraws of Shadow. In fact, I'd say about 1/2 of the shots of him were misdrawn! It's ridiculous! See for yourselves what I mean and go watch the episode. 4/10
Effort 2 There wasn't really too much to develop on here, so can let this one go. They didn't make an attempt, but there was nothing to attempt. 6/10 1
