Episode 39: Defective Detectives (English) Great name by the way.
Chaotix Detective Agency (Japanese)
The New Ones Arrive (French)
Premiered: December 11, 2004
Summary: The episode opens to Big and Froggy sitting under a tree (possibly to avoid getting the fanfetti -or whatever that sparkly stuff was- in his fur). Meanwhile, an elderly couple has a small hut drop onto their roof. We then cut to the president, who is being informed that a number of new animals (older Sonic fans may recognise them as the animals you freed from Badniks in the original games) arrive on the planet. The President is determining what to do about them, and his secretary tells him that all she knows is the birds are called Flickies (which is true in the games as well). Back in Station Square (it could be another city, but Station Square seems like a logical guess) Rouge and Knuckles are conversing, the former telling him that if too many creatures came from Sonic's world they may be captured (read: pest control). Of course, Knuckles gets ticked off, before Rouge points out the facts. Knuckles then says he won't go without a fight (safe bet there)The others wonder about what will be done if the newcomers get out of control. Rouge then tells Knuckles she wouldn't mind a bit if they shared a cell. In the Station Square harbor, Chris and Chuck have a heartfelt discussion on what may happen to Sonic and friends. Then (finally, after about 7 minutes) you see the Chaotix Headquarters. Charmy finds news about their whereabouts for Vector, who's surprised to see that Sonic is a hero (which makes me wonder what Sonic was like before). Vector then tells them to remember their mission (which is revealed later in the episode). He decides to introduce himself, which made for a nice "breaking the 4th wall" moment. Charmy begins to but gets interrupted by Espio, who says he's the brains (which is a little off; I thought Vector was the brains...). Charmy finally gets in a phrase edgewise, but he gets bumped out by a commercial break. Off his island base (yes, the one he had for the early half of the 1st season) Eggman contacts the president and offers to fix the moon-for free. He then fixes the moon (half of it got destroyed by the Eclipse Cannon in the last episode) with a metal dome of his called the Eggmoon (which might be a minipun of sorts: Eggman-Eggmoon). He then makes a deal with the president, and I swear, you see the president's aide (who got fired in the first season) in the room. Sonic doesn't trust Eggman, though. Later, he runs into Eggman near the city. Eggman then tells him he's planning to retire, much to Sonic's surprise. Just as their conversation starts to kick off, a woman from behind interrupts. The Chaotix think Sonic kidnapped Cream (their mission was to find her) and they attempt to break into Chris' mansion. When Sonic arrives home, he and Vector get into an argument. Just before he a fight breaks out, Sonic tells Cream someone is there to see her. Cream turns to see her mother (Vanilla, whose name is never actually mentioned in-show, but I'll refer too her as that), and they lock in an incredibly adorable embrace. Vanilla then thanks Sonic and the Chaotix for looking after Cream. The Chaotix get forgiven. Eggman laughs and flies away, clearly proving he hasn't given up on his desire to rule the world.
Review: This could've easily been one of the best episodes in the 2nd Season if it wasn't so imbalanced. For crying out loud, the actual plot (The Chaotix finding Cream) only lasted 4-5 minutes, yet there was an unnecessarily long flashback of the first 3 episodes that lasted about 6 minutes. Also, the way scenes were placed was very disorganized. To me it seemed like scenes were just thrown in random places to fit the time limit. While there were quite a few redeeming moments, such as Cream's and Vanilla's reunion and the Chaotix's introduction, they were mostly flattened by the lousy scene placements. The continuity breach of having Jerome in there didn't help, either. 7.5/10
Effort: Let's talk about cutting. Normally, I have no problem with cuts; they're usually done for two reasons: 1. The scene itself was inappropriate or...
2. Time constraints. I don't have anything against 4kids for cutting scenes for the most part. They must have a very hard time deciding what to cut if nothing "inappropiate" is present. They have to cut about 3 minutes of show to get the episodes to fit with the time slots offered to them. There's a lot of pressure (too much, I think) placed on their shoulders, and that's why I avoid mentioning it in my reviews. I personally enjoyed the Chaotix's self-introduction. It's not too often you see a character's own slanted view of themselves in this way. In this case, it turned out hilarious. Two of the three sound great; Charmy and Espio sound awesome, but Vector sounds so awful. But it gets worse...Vector appears in the 3rd season and his voice is even worse (which almost seems impossible). I noticed in this episode that Eggman sounded very "Deem Bristow-ish" (Deem Bristow was Eggman's voice actor before Mike Pollock took over in-game) in this episode, which is good or bad depending on how you look at it (Personally, I never liked him). I won't add or remove points for that, it was only a random observation. Vector's "impersonations" were another great touch. The only thing that really ruined this episode was the near-constant scene-switching and 4kids' misplaced priorities in scene-cutting. 4/10
Effort 2: The only section that went unaffected by the cuts. Well, okay, maybe I shouldn't say "unaffected", rather least affected. Once again, the Rouge-Knuckles pairing was played out excellently, I'd say even better than in past episodes. It was also one of the only scenes that didn't suffer from all the cuts made. The Chaotix also made quite the contribution by way of their personalities and overall role in the episode. The ending hug between Cream and Vanilla only tipped it in for me. 10/10
Episode 40: Sunblock Solution (English) Seriously, what a bad name.
Eggman Corporation (Japanese)
A Juicy Matter (French)Wow, all the names are bad and irrelevant; it only makes me wonder what's in store for the episode.
Premiered: December 18, 2004
Summary: It's New Year's and everyone is watching the sunrise. Apparently watching the sun rise on New Year's is a Japanese tradition, and is also done in various Japanese media, such as the video game Harvest Moon. 4kids did a good job Americanizing here; Chris simply says he wanted to try a new tradition. Just as the sun peeks over the horizon, The Eggmoon malfunctions and blocks out the sun. After a press conference, Eggman volunteers to make artificial sunlight and the President grants him permission to build mirror towers that power the sunlight balls. He launches a rocket into space that deploys a small satellite between the moon and sun. The satellite collects rays from the sun, and beams them down to a tower where it begins to charge. As much as I question how that would work, there've been bigger breaches in logic (and science) than that in the franchise. Soon after, a commercial airs for the Sunshine Balls (you in the back, stop sniggering). Everyone wants them, and Eggman's phone is off the hook with orders. Sonic gets suspicious and heads out. Decoe and Bocoe (who must be even more overworked than usual) go around installing all the Sunshine Balls, and muse that it feels good to be helping people. Foreshadowing, perhaps? Everyone else however is enjoying the "sunlight" from the Sunshine balls. Knuckles even begins to trust Eggman. Later, the president informs Eggman that he is a national hero. In another area, Sonic comes across some of Eggman's "sunshine towers", which I'll call them for future reference, and destroys each one by one. In Eggman's lab, he and his robots hear that some of the towers have collapsed. Eggman is unsure why it collapsed, but Chris has an idea that Sonic did it. The president finds footage of Sonic destroying the towers, and the media is soon informed. The news must have traveled veryfast, for only a moment later, a mob is gathered outside Chris' mansion demanding Sonic. Tails thinks Sonic destroyed the towers out of spite, but Chris insists he must've had a good reason. Back at Eggman's base, Decoe and Bocoe show him a TV, and Eggman breaks the fourth wall and tells the viewers to tune in next time for...Eggman X?
Plot: There wasn't a lot of action, but it leads into almost a mystery-style plot and is an awesome set-up for the next episode. Also, this is one of those episodes where Eggman truly shows his "evil genius" side. I personally liked the "Eggman X" gag at the end, which worked even better since Sonic X airs on a weekly basis. The reason why Sonic doesn't trust Eggman is revealed in the next episode. It's actually sort of obvious, even though it's something most people (including ever-oblivious me) wouldn't put any thought into...8/10
Effort: Once again, I really did like the "Eggman X" joke, which if used correctly could actually be very funny. For example, changing the intro's words ("Gotta go faster,faster,fasterfaster...Eggman? X!) or something along those lines. Still, I doubt 4kids will take it any further. I had no problems with this episode, either. 8.5/10
Effort 2: I'm thinking TMS/4kids could really take this plot idea somewhere with just a little more Effort 2 *cringes at the name*. For example, getting a little more in-depth with what the abscence of the sun could do, and definetly on Sonic's hero-to-zero drop, and vice versa for Eggman. While in this episode, there was very little way to work it in, TMS did their best without ruining the pace of the episode, and in an episode like this where there's so much going on, pacing is extremely important. 7/10
Episode 41: Eggman for President (English)
We Can See the Light!(Japanese) How ironic, the Japanese name is a pun and the English one isn't.
What Be the Light (French)
Premiered: January 2, 2005 (Another one of those occasional episodes that premiered later than a week after the last one)
Summary: Chris and the others (except Sonic, who is out destroying mirror towers) are facing a mob outside the mansion (since Sonic is destroying the mirror towers). Sam Speed shows up to drive off the mob. The president (with advice from Eggman) orders the military to destroy Sonic. Knuckles decides to stop Sonic from destroying the mirror towers, too. They fight for a while, until Tails shows up with Chris and Amy. Sonic explains why he didn't believe Eggman. He says that since the moon revolves around the planet, and the planet revolves around the sun, there's no way the Eggmoon could've stopped moving and block out the sun. He then says Eggman must be controlling it to block out the sun. Meanwhile at the capital, the people have fallen under Eggman's control (supposedly the sunshine balls emit a glow that can put people into a trance). Topaz alerts the President on this, but it's too late. He's already being held captive by Eggman, who has taken over. Sonic forces Eggman out onto a trivia-style escape where he gets arrested after the question "Who is the coolest guy in the world?" Eggman answers "Me, of course!" and gets crushed by a rock and arrested. Sonic becomes the hero again.
Plot: It doesn't have that much action, but I'll admit that had to be one of Eggman's best plots yet...in both the games or any Sonic show. It was complex, it was somewhat unpredictable, it was very original, and it was a bit humorous (a little humor never hurts). The trivia ending was a nice touch, too. As for Sonic's revelation, I bet at least 90% of the viewers weren't thinking of that, though it seems obvious. I guess there's some truth to something being "so obvious one didn't notice it". 10/10
Effort: This is the only Sonic X episode where this happens, but there's a few-second scene where Sonic is running in the desert, and his mouth is moving without him saying a word! That's happened in the games before, only it was more obvious. Sonic Adventure 2 is littered with bad lip-syncing, (the scene where Sonic and friends first arrive on the ARK comes to mind), and even a little in the new Sonic the Hedgehog. I'll have to detract a couple points from the brilliant plotting. 7/10 (would be 10/10)
Effort 2: More of the same from last episode. 7/10
Episode 42: A Date to Forget (English)
Amy's Love's Escape Journey (Japanese)
A Beautiful Rabbit (French) Either think Amy's a rabbit, or Cream had a much smaller role than they anticipated. No, it's not a mistranslation, either.
Premiered: January 29, 2005 (The episodes were not premiering in their usual one-a-week schedule)
Summary: Bukkon finds an ancient robot and activates it. Amy thinks she got stood up by Sonic when he promised her a date but never showed up. Sam Speed shows up, telling Amy that Sonic was going to race with him but didn't show up. Amy goes with Sam in his race car. Bukkon is trying to free Eggman from prison when Sonic shows up and combats him. Amy and Sam agree not to talk about Sonic anymore and decide to go to the beach. Bukkon tells Sonic that he was only the distraction, and that Eggman has already broken out. Amy and Sam run into one of Eggman's robots, and Amy defeats it. Later, Sonic appears at the beach apologizing for being late. He and Sam then race, leaving Amy behind.
Review: Ugh. What a boring episode. NOTHING interesting happened other than Bukkon's discovery, and even still, that wasn't much. There were no good lines, no good scenes, and no good events. The only good thing is that it starred Amy, who is my 4th favorite character. 4.5/10
Episode 43: Mean Machines (English) Just from reading the title, I fear for this episode.
Huge Home Electronics Panic! (Japanese)
The Revolt of the Appliances (French)
Premiered: February 5, 2005
Summary: Many people are following the "Sonic Mantra": run, relax and have fun. In other words, they've taken up Sonic-esque lifestyles. Because of this, the workers at Chris' dad's company have let their work quality slip. Many machines are breaking easily, and they are being sent to prison to be fixed by Eggman. He knows Sonic is (indirectly, of course) behind the lack of quality and wants revenge. Eggman then puts in microchips that will cause the machines to go on a rampage. When the machines are sent back, they begin to insert microchips in other machines. The machines get activated and attack. In Chris' mansion the machines have everyone outnumbered. Emerl sees Sonic spin-attack a machine and copies his attack. The sprinkler gets activated and the machines stop attacking. It's then discovered that water causes the machines to return to normal. Sonic and the others go to stop the other machines in town. They meet up with Knuckles, who decides to help them. They then figure out that the water supply was shut down by the machines. Chris, Tails, Amy and Chris' parents go to the nearest dam and turn on the water. The firefighters then use the water to defeat the machines.
Review: An okay episode. The plot was sort of corny, and the action wasn't very exciting. There were a few good jokes here and there, but overall the dialogue was pretty bland. 6/10
Episode 44: Sewer Search (English)
The Ridiculous Epic Spy Battle (Japanese)
Almost Mission Impossible (French) Finally a French-episode-name pun, and a pretty good one, I must add.
Premiered: February 12, 2005
Summary: Mr. Stuart has been searching for Eggman since he escaped from prison (last episode). He sees Bocoe run off, and goes to follow him, only Chris, Helen, Francis, Danny, Cream and Emerl stop him. Meanwhile, Rouge and Topaz are also looking for Eggman. Mr. Stuart sees Eggman get in a taxi (what?) and leave. He follows Eggman, but then Eggman gets away. They find out he went underground into the sewer. Mr. Stuart eventually catches up with Eggman, but he then catches them in a net and locks them into a conveniently-located cell in the sewer. Bocoe accuses Mr. Stuart of being a spy, but he (obviously) denies it. After the robot leaves, Mr. Stuart picks the lock using Helen's bobby pin. They open a door using some chemicals Mr. Stuart had on him and go on to face another door. This time Mr. Stuart considers hacking the computer system to open the door, but realizes with the kid's safety at risk, it would be unwise. Helen then sees Bukkon and tricks him into finding Sonic by saying Ella will give him pie if he asks her,(which would get him to reveal where Chris and the others were). Eggman finds them and uses a spider robot to attack. Sonic finds them just and time and battles the robot. Rouge appears and fights, too. Emerl copies her screw kick (this is the first and only episode it is named) and defeats the spider robot. He also breaks the door with it. While Sonic, Rouge, Chris, Mr. Stuart and the kids escape, so does Dr. Eggman.
Another average episode. That is, EVERYTHING in this episode was average. The plot was, the animation was, the voice acting was, the ending was, and so on, so forth. This is the first (and only) episode where Rouge's trademark kick attack is called the "Screw Kick". I could care less either way; I just think it's sort of stupid when characters yell out their attack names before they attack, with VERY few exceptions. Pokemon is one of these. 6.5/10
Episode 45: Prize Fights (English)
Sonic Battle-Face Off! (Japanese) A plug for a Sonic game that came out a year before, got very little success (despite my opinion on it; it's one of the best games ever) and like Sonic Shuffle and Knuckles Chaotix will fade into oblivion in a decade or so.
A Fascinating Competition (French) I'll say.
Premiered: February 19, 2005
Summary: In a plot to capture Dr. Eggman, the president holds a battle tournament with the prize being a Chaos Emerald. Rouge and Sonic enter, but Knuckles is hesitant. The President, Topaz, Sonic and Rouge all pressure him to join, and eventually he gives in. Chris, Tails, Emerl, Amy, Mr. Tanaka, Chris' dad, Chuck and even Ella enter too, along with many familiar characters from past episodes. Chuck throws out his back while training (well, it never really says what happened, but it looks that way). Chris and Danny then fight, and Chris tricks him. Lucky (that cute little bell-shaped robot from A Dastardly Deed) wins because Chuck got injured and could'nt fight. Decoe and Bocoe enter, but in a humorous twist are pitted against eachother. The police then come and they flee. Tails fights Hawk and wins. Amy is pitted against Bukkon, who starts crying due to what Amy said before ("No way, they let YOU enter this?!"). She tries to comfort him, but he calls her a liar, and she beats him for that. Knuckles faces the Black Knight. They don't even fight; the Black Knight is revealed to be Jerome Wise (the President's ex-aide). Knuckles chases him off when he pleads for Knuckles to forfeit. The second round begins. Chris takes down his dad easily. Sam Speed fights Mr. Stuart, but gets disqualified because he started fighting before the bell rang. Lucky wins because Decoe and Bocoe have fled. Mr. Tanaka has to face Topaz and instead gives her a beautiful necklace. When Chris asks why he did that, Ella tells him you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Tails fights Rouge, who defeats him by kissing him (his expression was hilarious). Amy and Sonic are up next, but neither wants to fight. Eggman appears and tries to blast Amy with a laser. Sonic sets off after him, and the tension is relieved.
Episode Review: This was a pretty good start to the Sonic Battle adaptation (well, it wasn't really an adaptation, but it's called that). There were some nice little emotional scenes here and there, such as when Tanaka gave Topaz the necklace (that was done very well) and when Chris felt guilty about tricking Danny and talked with Sonic (which was done even better), but there was some good humor in there. It was a nice mix. In fact, this episode was actually a little better than the next one. It was also a little unpredictable (I was expecting Sonic to win-the main character is almost always the one who wins), which is good. 8/10
Episode 46: A Wild Win (English)
Sonic Battle-Finale! (Japanese)
The Final Fight (French)
Premiered: February 26, 2005
Summary:The tournament from last time continues. Knuckles and Chris are up against eachother, but Knuckles doesn't want to fight him. Chris then forfeits when Knuckles points out if Chris goes ahead he'll face either Amy or Rouge. Emerl then fights Mr. Tanaka and wins (of course). Rouge and Amy fight, and Rouge wins. E-77 runs out of power when up against Emerl and loses. Rouge has a tent put up so Knuckles and her can fight in the dark (Rouge figured she'd have the advantage). Knuckles still wins, but barely. He goes on to fight Emerl, who he loses against. Emerl is given the Chaos Emerald and goes on a rampage. Rouge, Knuckles and Sonic combine their efforts to stop him while Cream is watching in horror. They all lose to Emerl, who can copy all their abilities at once. He leads Sonic to the ocean where he figures Sonic will have the disadvantage. Cream and Cheese go to fight Emerl, and defeat him, knocking him into the water. Cream begins to cry because she destroyed her friend.
Review: This was a pretty good episode overall. Cream's voice acting was exceptionally good, too. The last scene was done very well, despite what's stated in the next sentence. There's one huge flaw I noticed in this episode's conclusion, though. It says Emerl can copy three abilities at once (Rouge's Sonic's and Knuckles'; that's why they lost together) yet it's stated in the episode that Cream and Cheese could only defeat him because he couldn't copy two abilities at once. How can he copy three but not be able to copy two abilities?! I also liked how Cream got a chance to be the heroine (which almost never happens, she's always overlooked).
Episode 47: Map of Mayhem (English)
Decisive Battle on the Equator (Japanese) Funny, it looked much further north on the map.
The Navel of the World (French)
Premiered: March 5, 2005
Summary:A navy ship mysteriously disappears. Knuckles finds an ancient map showing the location of a long-lost civilization (Morasia). Later Decoe and Bocoe dress up as mummies and steal it (yes, it's stupid, but it's kind of funny in a way). Knuckles tells Sonic and the others about it, and they head out on Chris' father's yacht (remember it from "Cruise Blues"?) to find Morasia. They get attacked by one of Eggman's ships. Luckily, a group sent by the government including Rouge looking for the captives from the navy ship help Sonic battle off Eggman's ship. Rouge rescues the captives and (almost) catches Eggman.
Review: This was another fairly good episode. The shipfight was a little boring, though there were some good lines scattered throughout it. 7/10
Episode 48: The Volcanic Venture (English)
Sonic vs the Monster from Underground (Japanese) I've also heard it translated as "Sonic vs the Monster from the Underground", which conjurs up a mental image of Godzilla smashing through London's subways.
The Disappeared Continent (French) Somehow that doesn't sound right. Don't get me wrong; I trust Rhiannon's translating skills, but I'm guessing it would be "The Continent that Disappeared". Still Rhiannon knows French much better than me.
Premiered: March 12, 2005
Summary: Sonic, Knuckles, Chris, Rouge and Tails go into a volcano to find the lost city of Morasia (I don't know why Amy stayed behind, though, neither version explains). They come across a tunnel, but only Rouge, Knuckles and Sonic fit (once again this leaves me wondering why Tails and Chris can't go through; Tails is shorter than all of them, and Chris could crawl). After many humorous mishaps, they come out in Morasia. Chris and Tails somehow got in using the X-Tornado (where they got in from is one more thing never explained). Eggman finds yet another way in with Decoe, Bocoe and Bukkon and sets off a detonator to blast open the volcano. Decoe and Bocoe get chased by a giant moth/butterfly (the show says it's a moth, but it looks like a swallowtail butterfly). Chris saves them, but he falls down a hole with them and gets "captured" by Eggman. Sonic and the others get readings from Professor Cadbury aboveground saying the volcano could erupt soon. They prepare to leave, but they run into an odd robot-thing that attacks them (since when could ancient civilizations build robots?!). Sonic finds the detonator that Eggman set off and uses it to blow up the robot. They then escape. At the end of the episode, as they sail away, Decoe and Bocoe appear (their timing was great; Chris was just talking about how they weren't that bad) and say they quit working for Eggman.(how did they get onboard? How did they get off the island?)
Review: This story arc (Quest for Morasia) only marked these significant happenings. 1. It featured the first cleavage-cut on Rouge and 2. During it, Tails' voice acting improved (and stayed improved for the rest of the show) and 3: Decoe and Bocoe finally quit working for Eggman (this was hinted at over all the second season past the SA2 adaptation). This episode is a little worse than the last one, mainly due to the lack of explanation. I'm not a literalist, but I still think there should've been some sort of explanations. Still, it earns a 7 (though barely). 7/10
Episode 49: Beginning of the End (English)Awesome title; it reminds me of this great line from the N*SYNC song "Space Cowboy": "Is this a beginning or beginning of the end?"
The Day the Earth Stood Still (Japanese) Not yet. Good title, by the way.
A Blow of Cold(French Dang, they broke the "good title" streak!
Premiered: March 12, 2005 (weird, it premiered the same day as the last episode)
Summary: Sonic is causing a worldwide "freedom craze"! Chris' parents even come back to Chris' home to celebrate freedom. Decoe and Bocoe are also enjoying freedom, but for a different reason (they're glad they quit working for Eggman). However, later that night, a physicist working for the government comes over to talk to Chuck and Chris' parents. She tells them about how their planet and Sonic's planet once were one planet, but the timeline split in two. She says Sonic and the other's presence is causing the timelines to join together again, which would cause time to stop on both planets. Then she says Sonic and the others will have to come back. Chris, who has been listening in on the conversation, hears this, and states that "Sonic is staying here, and if you try to take him away, you're going to be sorry!". He says it must be one of Eggman's tricks, and for a moment, his dad agrees. When Chuck tells Chris that Sonic has to go, Chris runs off. He finds Decoe and Bocoe and tells them to take him to Eggman. They summon Bukkon to take him to Eggman. At Eggman's base, Chris accuses Eggman of trying to trick the world's leading scientists into thinking Sonic has to go back. Eggman plays along with Chris' accusations before saying that he truly didn't do it and that Chris will have to face the facts. He returns home. Meanwhile, Sonic sees something red shining in a crevice.
Review: Though there wasn't much action or humor, the good dialogue made up for it. I'll note Dr. Eggman sounded even better than usual this episode. So did Chris. The only objection I have is that Sonic only appeared for the last few seconds of this episode. Still, there have been great episodes in which Sonic's hardly appeared in and there have been mediocre episodes Sonic's appeared in. I was a little confused by the red glow at the end of the episode. It took me a while to figure out that was a Chaos Emerald. 7/10
Episode 50: Running Out of Time (English)
Morning of Farewells (Japanese)
A Sad Morning (French) Yay, all good names this time!
Premiered: March 19, 2005
Summary: Some military commander ignores all orders not to attack Eggman, and sends a huge force out to attack his base. Not only that, he stages a coup and holds the president hostage. Rouge and Knuckles somehow find out and rescue him together. Eggman doesn't want to fight, and just sits there watching the military machines destroy everything. Sonic then shows up and starts fighting the military machines. Eggman then fights, too, with a hidden fortress/robot (though why didn't he just use it in the first place?). Eggman then thanks Sonic and gives him a data chip of some sort. Sonic gives Tails and Chuck, who are working on a portal back to Sonic's world, the chip, figuring they'll know what to do with it. Later, the machine is apparently up and running, so Chris and the others prepare to send Sonic and his friends back. They say their goodbyes and head back. Sonic is about to head back, but hesitates before the portal entrance. Chris then hits the button that shuts it off. Sonic slowly turns around to face him, shocked at Chris' sudden reaction.
Review: This episode was a great lead-in to next episode's events. My only objection was that there was nothing that hinted at the commander's coup; it just...happened. It seemed a little too random, though it was an interesting idea to add some action into this episode. 7/10
Episode 51: Friends 'Til the End (English)
Chris' Long Journey (Japanese)
Chris' Voyage (French) Essentially the same as the Japanese name, but worded differently.
Premiered: March 19, 2005 (this is not a typo; this episode premiered on the same day as the last one)
Summary: There's an almost-3-minute-long recap of the last scene in the last episode, but this time it's actually the same scene happening again, with Chris' added thoughts, "Please, don't go! I can't let you leave!". Then after this flashback, Chris grabs Sonic's hand and pulls him away. They run off into the woods. The next day, Chris' parents send out huge search teams to look for Chris. Chris however finds out about this (it was announced on the news, and they saw it in a restaurant tv). They then hitch a ride in a pickup truck, since they see a squad of helicopters after them. As they walk through a forest, Chris wonders if Sonic will forget him. Sonic says he could never forget Chris. They head to a lakehouse that Chris used to visit when he was little, but they stopped since his parents were too busy. Sonic starts up a fire, and Chris asks him why he hasn't objected to not being able to return home. Sonic replies saying he was waiting for Chris to bring up the subject. Chris then asks why Sonic came along and how long he's staying. Sonic says he'll stay as long as Chris wants since Chris saved him. Chris then gets angry, thinking that Sonic only wanted to be friends since he thought he owed Chris. Sonic says he'll stay if Chris wants him to and that he is Sonic's friend. Chris then tells Sonic he doesn't have to stay if he isn't happy. Sonic says he'll always be happy as long as there's enough space to run. Chris then tells Sonic he can leave, saying it would be wrong to keep him in this world. Sonic believes their worlds were meant to come together and that they would see eachother again someday. Chris' parents then arrive alone, overjoyed to see he's okay.
Review: While there wasn't a lot of action, this was still one of the best episodes in the second season. This is easily one of the most emotional episodes in Sonic X. I cried during the fireside Chris-Sonic conversation. I loved how Sonic was handled. He conveyed a lot of emotion, yet his dialogue and behavior were still consistent with his personality. This was one of the only times that's been done well. 9/10
Episode 52: A New Start (English)
Memories of the Wind (Japanese) It doesn't make much sense, but it sure sounds pretty.
Memories, Memories (French)
Premiered: March 26, 2005
Summary: Eggman is actually looking for Sonic, he seems to be bored not having an enemy to fight. Even late at night, he's still causing a racket. Amy yells at him to be quiet. Eggman and Amy then begin to argue. Meanwhile, Knuckles and Rouge are wondering where Sonic has gone. Knuckles accidentally offends her and they begin to argue. Their argument quickly turns into a fight. Tails, who can't get any sleep from all the racket, attacks Eggman's new fortress to get him to shut up. Eggman then fires a giant homing missile at Tails, who accidentally activates an upgrade Chuck installed before Tails left. Even still, Tails can't evade the missile. Suddenly a golden blur appears and slices through the missile. Super Sonic then reveals himself to Eggman and destroys the ship. Rouge and Knuckles see this and stop fighting. Amy then runs to see him. Sonic (in his normal form) appears before her. Amy then gets angry at him, saying that she was worried he'd never come back. Sonic then says, "Don't worry, Amy, I never will,". Meanwhile, on Chris' planet, years later, Chris has flashbacks of his adventures with Sonic.
Review: This episode had a nice mix of things. There was some humor, some action, yet it was still emotional. There was some great dialogue as well, including Amy's and Sonic's conversation, Knuckles' and Rouge's conversation, and Chris' scene. It's too bad you don't see the Chaotix, though. Oh well, it's not a big deal. 10/10
