Robert Saxon is one of the country's most versatile
performers. He first drew attention as alto and tenor saxophonist and
frontman for the jazz band Touchdown which won acclaim with performances
at The Theatre Royal Stratford East, The Half Moon, Riverside Studios
and the inaugural live show of Capital Radio's XYZ.
After leaving The Rose Bruford School of Speech and Drama,he
joined Andre Gavrillac's Troubadours, playing Richard III, Edmund from
King Lear, and Spurio in The Revenger's Tragedy. He went on to join Paul
Harrington's Reunion Theatre Company playing among others, Aston in Harold
Pinter's The Caretaker, and Jimmy Porter in John Osborne's Look Back in
Anger. Film credits include Wolfram in The Dark, and Vangard in Angelfire.
As a magician he has achieved acclaim in several fields.
He has performed close-up magic at many of London's prestigious hotels
including The Ritz, The Dorchester, The Hilton, and The Connaught Rooms.
He also enjoyed a short season at The Crazy Horse Saloon in Paris. As
an illusionist he has performed at most of London's more prominent nightclubs
which resulted in his appointment as Entertainment Director for The Limelight
Club and later Xenon's. He is often seen at major events at Britain's
castles including Leeds, Orford, Eastnor, and Hampton Court Palace, and
is a familiar face on some of the Thames' most prominent showboats including
The Symphony and The Dixie Queen. He has also performed in the VIP lounge
at Wembley Stadium during events like The Budweiser Bowl, and concerts
by leading artists like Michael Jackson and Madonna.
Robert produced two full scale illusion and circus shows:
Spellbound which premiered at The London Paladium before he took it to
Tokyo and Yokohama, and Phantaste which toured Europe and India. He also
designed illusions and coached actors for Nick Hedges' original National
Youth Theatre production of The Tempest, and was a consultant on BBC's
Tricky Business and NBC's Unbelievable!
Phoenix began life as Robert's small project designed
to help theatricals who were out of work and looking for a way back in.
It has since become an obsession as he realised how little was out there
to help this industry in real-world practical ways.
For Phoenix he has written, produced, directed and designed
original musicals including The Lamp and Humbug! (both of which he also
co-composed) and DecaDance. Other producing and directing credits include
The Little Shop of Horrors, A View From The Bridge, Macbeth, The Tempest
and Romeo and Juliet.
Robert is currently working on the combining of classic
and modern dance, drama, illusion, and various circus skills to create
a new performance type and a more visually challenging way to tell a story.
The first show using these techniques, Nature's Stepchildren, is on the
drawing board and will tour to The Ukraine by invitation of that country's
government once it is complete before returning to Britain, hopefully
to be staged in Phoenix's own full scale venue before going on to tour
nationally. He also has several stage and filmscripts in various stages
of planning and is looking forward to taking Phoenix on to the next level,
and using his knowledge, skills, and experience to open doors for others
He regards Phoenix as his first good point well made.
He may never recover from the shock.
