Seax-Wica
aka w00t! No coven for me!
This is an article written by one of my good friends, PhantomPhoenix0. He is an ex Seax-Wican who wrote this article for me as an addition to my "Wicca: An Initiation Debate" page.
And here it is:
Alright, so many of you have found the classic argument in Wicca of You need to be initiated by a coven in order to be Wiccan. However, many people believe that this is not the case, and insist that covens are not necessary. In the case of Seax-Wica, this is true in a sense. For those not familiar with the real Wiccan lineage form, allow me to illustrate.:
Gardner
(Yes, he did form the religion. No more Wicca is ancient bullshit.)

And so on and so forth. This is because of the mysteries. They are integral to being Wiccan, and are only allowed to be passed through Wiccan covens. When Raymond Buckland brought Wicca to the United States, he was sickened by the way it was spreading, and left. Deciding to form his own religion, he sits down and writes Seax-Wica. One major difference of this from Wicca is the lack of mysteries. Thats right, NONE. There is no oathbound material in Seax-Wica, and as such, I could tell you every single thing you need to know to be Seax-Wican.

Q: Cool! Can you?
A: ErrNo. While Seax-Wica doesnt contain any oathbound material, I dont agree with it being freely available. Research it. You may learn something.

With the absence of oathbound material, anyone who wishes to study it, can learn every thing about it, and become Seax-Wican.

Q: Does this mean I need a coven?
Nope. You dont need a coven at all. However, according to The Tree (The Seax-Wican Book of Shadows), the preferred method is being initiated by a coven. However, lets say you live in the middle of nowhere, and no covens are to be found. Never fear, Self-Dedication is here! *end radio announcer voice* If there are no covens around, you can do a Self-Dedication, and become Seax-Wican. Any coven will then recognize your status (now you know why I dont want to share anything. I hate to be the one to arm 50,000 fluffies that can now scream IM WICCAN!!!).

Q: If I can just Self-Dedicate, why bother looking for a coven?
How about because its the way its supposed to be? Self-Dedication is only meant to be used when you cannot find a Seax-Wican coven. Not when you are too lazy to look for one. Like Wicca, you are free to practice solitary once youve been initiated, but for the sake of the Lord and Ladys sanity, actually try LOOKING for a coven before you decide Ill just do a self-dedication.

Q: So does this mean I can Self-Dedicate and call myself Wiccan?
No. Seax-Wica is a different religion from Wicca. Self-Dedicating and then calling yourself Wiccan is like me having a Bar-Mitzvah and saying Im Christian.

I dont understand, I thought Seax-Wica was a Wiccan tradition.
If the spelling difference didnt do it for you, lets look at the facts. The Wiccan mysteries are what make a person Wiccan. Walking three times in a circle naked with a stick of incense may be what Wiccans do (note: I do not claim that this is what they do in lineaged covens. This is basic stuff I got from Wicca 101 books, so the credibility is questionable), but knowing WHY they do it is what makes someone Wiccan.

Seax-Wica takes a step back, and has NO traces of the Wiccan Mysteries. Ray Buckland was Wiccan. He knew the mysteries. He left, and created Seax-Wica Without using ANY of Gardners material. No mysteries = Not Wiccan. End of story.

Wow, Seax-Wica sounds interesting.
Good for you. Now go research it. Im not going to talk about the dogma of it. Like I said earlier, I dont agree with everything being so freely available. If you wish to know about it, research it. You will learn something.

And besides, its not like Google bit anyone in the past ;)
