Cloud Strife, former SOLDIER First-Class.  He left SOLDIER to join a rebel group called AVALANCHE.  Cloud leads the life of a mercenary.  The only thing that keeps him from walking out of AVALANCHE is his childhood friend, Tifa.
Infused with Mako upon joining SOLDIER, Cloud's eyes glow a brilliant blue.
Born and raised in Nibelheim, Cloud left his home at 14 to go to Midgar to join SOLDIER and become like Sephiroth.  He returned to Nibelheim at16 on a mission.  This is when the whole town was burned by a mentally-broken Sephiroth.  Cloud has a personal vindetta against his former idol.
Cloud is also on a quest much larger than saving the Planet from Sephiroth...He is on a quest to find himself...

Barret Wallace is the titular head of AVALANCHE.  He started the group to try to save the Planet from the Shinra who were "sucking the life-blood out of the Planet."  Barret moved to Midgar from North Corel.  He lives at Tifa's Seventh Heaven with his daughter Marlene.  Barret's right arm was injured and required an amputation.  He replaced the arm with a gun-arm.
For all his bluster, Barret has a kind, loyal, and generous heart.

Tifa Lockheart grew up in Nibelheim with Cloud.  The two are childhood friends.  She convinces him to stay with AVALANCHE after Cloud and Barret get into a heated argument.  Tifa's mother died when she was young, and her father was killed by Sephiroth.  She left Nibelheim for Midgar soon after her father died.  Once there, she met up with Barret and joined his rebel group.  Tifa's loyalties, however, lay with Cloud.  She holds the key to helping him discover the truth about who he really is...

Aeris Gainsborough is the last of the Ancients, also known as the Cetra.  She was orphaned during the War against Wutai, and was adopted by Elmyra.  Aeris met Cloud after the Sector 8 Reactor went up in a grand display of fireworks, and then again when he "dropped" into her Church.  Aeris is the only person who can truly save the Planet.
She is a bit of a mystery...Not much is really known about her past...Or her future...

Like Aeris, Red XIII is also the last of his race.  He was born and raised in Cosmo Canyon.  His kind were sworn to defend it.  Bugenhagen, his "grandfather," watches out for Red XIII, who is also called Nanaki.  Red XIII goes along with Cloud and Co. on their quest.  Even though he is very young, Red XIII is a source of wisdom and stability to the other members of his party.

Cait Sith is actually a cat on top of a Mog.  He is a robot controlled by Reeve back at Shinra, Inc.  Cait Sith is at first a turncoat, but when he realizes the importance of the mission the party is on, he quickly comes to their aid.  He even sacrifices his stuffed body to help them out.  He later reports to the party the going-ons at Shinra, Inc., thus giving Cloud and Co. an advantage over their enemies.

Cid Highwind...the first man to ALMOST reach space.  He is a famous pilot who still dreams of reaching the stars.  His space flight was halted because of a faulty oxygen tank.  Cid maintains the rocket in hopes that Shinra will one day re-open their Space Exploration Program.
However, Cid turns his back on the Shinra to help Cloud and Co.  He is loyal, and a good leader.

Yuffie, a young ninja, materia hunter, and all around pain in the butt.  She joins the party after they defeat her in the Junon Forest area.  Her loyalties lay with herself.  She is immature and a theif.  From Wutai, Yuffie has a intense dislike for the Shinra.  This dislike is the cause for a feud between she and her father, Godo. 
Yuffie stays with the party, not to save the Planet, but to try to get their materia.
