Alixthis are thought to have been created on accident when meddling mages tried to cross-breed dragon and basilisk. What they ended up with was a total flop of the original idea. Instead of haveing both the frightening presance of a dragon and the petrifying stare of the basilisk the resulting creatures had neiter (though it is rumored that if they get old enough they could aquier both). Native to an island nation they apperently were set loose after the initial disapointment of the mages that created them and spread throughout the tropics as they had no natural enemies. Later on those same mages went on to create a control for these beasts known as the Avorax but this went bad as well (see Avorax).
Much to the mages dismay their creations began to change without the control of the magics that had created them and three common stages have evolved. The hatchling, the adult, and the strange giant form. Rumors persist of a fourth form but none have ever been seen. All forms seem to always be hungry and will almost always attack in search of food.
Combat
An Alixthis attacks with its poisonous bite and attempts to render it victims helpless before devouring them. Usually the victim is still alive while being devoured so it is a very painfull way to go.
Poison- Bite, Fortitude save (DC 16); initial damage 1d4 temp. str. drain, secondary damage 1d6 temp. str. drain.
Skills: Alixthis recieve a +4 racial bonus to hide and spot checks.
Training an Alixthis
Training an Alixthis as a mount requires a successful Handle Animal check (DC 22 for a newly hatched, DC 26 for an adult, or DC 30 for the third stage). Unfortunately they won't be ready to ride for a matter of three months at which time they enter stage 2 and are large enough to ride.
Alixthis eggs are worth 1500 in the open market while young are worth 2400 gp. each. Most trainers won't take on this challenge as the Alixthis is always hungry but if you are lucky enough to get someone willing to train it the charge is usually around 5000 gold. Riding an Alixthis in combad requires an exotic saddle costing an aditional 500 gold. An Alixthis may fight while carrying a rider but the rider can not also attack unless he or she succeeds at a ride check.
Carrying Capacity: Load is done by age. A hatchling won't be usefull for carrying your stuff quite yet.
