From Nurse Jones,
Well, I got another email from the guy who thinks that I'm taking
ASB and bulletin board discussion groups in general too
seriously, that tolerance is something EVERYBODY learns, and my
wholehearted embracing of the idea of global tolerance e-therapy,
to paraphrase, smacks of immaturity and smells like the kind of
sudden religious ravelation that is so peculiarly attractive to
the half-baked mind.
He's right. Sort of. No, he's not. Just because he's wrong
doesn't mean my mind isn't half-baked.
Don't misunderstand: I'm not an Einstein, but I think that the
issue isn't the present superficiality of the medium, but the
unexplored potential. In fact someone once asked Albert himself
what good his theories were (this was when they were still on
paper) and he said "What good is a newborn child?"
Right now, any person in their right mind would dismiss this
e-medium as trivial. The real question is: is my long distance
vision better than that of Mr. Smartypants Pessimist? So I
breathlessly and perhaps prematurely exclaim that I can see the
"whole picture" and the future looks a little rosier thanks to
this embryonic medium.
So do I see the whole picture because I see well, or because
it is a shallow picture?
I think that (as a force for good in the world) this kind of
communication has at least the potential that television had (as
an educational tool) before it was reduced to an idiot box by
madison avenue. Now days the entire goal of television is to
suspend the operation of the intellect long enough to get money
from it. It is a failure, and the virtual world may fail too.
But the right question isn't "what good is it?"
The right question is, "What good might it be?"
I hereby swear on my three-deep stack of A.N. Roquelaire novels
that this will be my only post that has nothing to do with alt,
sex, or bondage.
And a kiss for Michael who seems to like me for my second
favorite organ.
Nurse Jones, out to save the world, one patient at a time if
necessary.
