A GUN BATTLE between two Minnieapolis patrolmen and three fugitives ended Saturday night in the death of one policeman and wounding of the other. Killed was Patrolman Robert H. Fossum, 31, 2748 Cedar Avenue. His partner, Ward Canfield, 35, 5740 Blaisdell Avenue, was hospitalized in critical condition. The map at left does not include the abduction of a Bloomington woman at Thirty-eighth street and First Avenue S. after the gunmen fled south on Nicollet. She was blindfolded and later thrown from the car into an alley,

The photo above shows the scene and the chalk marks police investigators placed in the street where Canfield fell under a hail of bullets.

AT THE SCENE of the gun battle, Mrs.Ward L. Canfield broke downand wept.
Her husband was one of the two Minneapolis patrolmenwho took part in the
running gun fight. Patrolman Richard Nelson, a fellow officer of Canfield's,
did his best to comfort Mrs. Canfield after she arrived at the scene.
