Mr.
Hi, I'm Phil, a Postmaster in South Wales. When I'm not working I enjoy walking, fishing and scuba diving.
Entry for August 27, 2007

Yesterday's trip to Green Scar rocks was superb.  I was diving with Phil Gillet.  We. rolled off the rib and swam over to the rocks.  Descent was onto a rocky bottom at about 12 metres.  Visibility was good but the first divers in the water had stirred the silt so we searched for clean ground.  The bottom shelved away and we were soon in 16 metres.  Here, viz was better and there was plenty of life with edible crab, lobster, velvet crab and sea urchins.  Under a ledge we spotted a large conger, and around the bigger rocky outcrops, huge pollack and wrasse could be seen.  We stayed down for the best part of an hour.  Our dive party was 14, and we used both ribs.  After ensuring that everybody was back on board we went into Solva harbour for lunch.  This has got to be one of the nicest little spots on the coast and we shared our lunch spot with several other parties of boaters who were taking advantage of the shelter.  After we had eaten we headed back down the coast and stopped off at Dinas Farw.  I hadn't dived this spot before and was surprised to hit 14 metres almost by the rocks.  The bottom shelved to 16 metres.  Viz wasn't so good this time so we stayed together and searched for lobster and crab amongst the rocks.

We got back to base around 6-30.  Recovery went ok, but we seem to spend a lot of time, probably because we used two vehicles, Billy's tractor and the tow jeep.  Anyway we were on our way by 7-00 and I was home at 8-45.  The journey East was pretty uneventful.  Traffic was ok ish but it's a nightmare journey when you're half asleep, not helped by cars and vans swapping lanes, slow moving vehicles and drivers unfamiliar with Welsh roads.

I was going to go back today but when I got up, I  was only half hearted.  I went to check on my 'dry suit' but it was still wet both inside and outside so I decided to stay at home.  Suki and I had  a slow walk along the Pant and around the Ely.  Sukes had a choking/coughing fit and it was several minutes before she was ready to continue.  We must get her checked out at the vets this week.

Later in the morning I went fishing.  The Wrings lake looked fantastic and after buying some new line I made my way to peg 14.   I fished out from the bank, into a breeze, using luncheon meat fished off the bottom.  Bites were not forthcoming even after throwing most of the meat in as ground bait.  I decided to have a go under the trees and was into a carp almost immediately.  This was followed by several snap offs; barbless hooks are essential at this venue.  I caught another carp later.  David the bailiff came for a chat.  He mentioned the river match on the 9th Sept.  I'll ask Len if there are any spare places.  I quite like the river matches.

I packed up at 4-00.  My meat bait had run out and the bread crusts were dried up.  Arriving home coincided with Suki's walk time so we put her in the car and set of for the horse field.  It was hot; the sun was high and the breeze had died down.  We walked all around and the little darling found fresh fox poo to roll in which meant a bath for her as soon as we got home.  There's no dive meting tonight so I intend having a quiet night.  I may try to write a column for the Observer either based on yesterday or write about diving types.  There, you now know as much as me.  I've been trying to steer  clear of the booze but I think I deserve a Speckled Hen and there's one can left.  Later on it's spag bol for tea and then Corrie.  Work tomorrow so I intend making the most of my evening off.
