Phi Sigma Sigma is the newest and largest sorority on Northern's Campus. Even though we are the newest on the campus, we are rich with many old traditions created when Phi Sigma Sigma was originally founded. It was founded at Hunter College NY, NY on November 26, 1913. There are many traditions to be followed along with many new ones being created.

The Theta Alpha chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma here at Northern was founded on the ideals of sisterhood, service, and scholarship. These ideals are still with us today and have led Phi Sigma Sigma on to be one of the top sororities on Northern's campus. The flower of Phi Sigma Sigma is the American Beauty Rose. As the petals on a rose, each sister is unique in her own way, yet joined together by a common bond.

History
Phi Sigma Sigma was founded by a group of ten women who wanted to start an organization that they could all belong to, even if they were from different cultures and religions. It started back in 1913 and now in 1996, there are Chapters all over the United States. Locally, Phi Sigma Sigma started at NMU during the fall of 1992. Twenty of us worked hard over the next six months to get our charter and become official. We did it and here we are!back to the top

Community Service
Phi Sigma Sigma is not only a social sorority, but a service sorority. We are very active in the community. In the spring of 1994 we won the Outstanding Community Service award from Northern.

We help with the Marquette Beautification Committee by pulling flowers with the Women's Center annually.

On Make-A-Difference Day sponsored by the Volunteer Center at NMU we participated by raking leaves for people that are not able to do it themselves.

Our chapter also volunteers to help with the Special Olympics at the Superior Dome.

We have bowled in a Bowl-A-Thon to raise money for a little girl in Marquette who has Cystic Fibrosis.

We partake in the TV6 Can-A-Thon.

For our national philanthropy, the National Kidney Foundation, we hold our annual Rock-a-thon at the Westwood Mall.

Scholarship
Phi Sigma Sigma strives for good scholarship. However, we know that for many, the college experience may be overwhelming and grades may not be as high as expected. Therefore, the required GPA for Phi Sigma Sigma is a 2.0. We do recommend that sisters try to reach a goal GPA of at least 2.2. We have many programs designed to help sisters with their education. These include Scholarship Sisters and awards for the sisters with the highest GPA. Along with these and many other things we have mandatory library hours to help with studying.back to the top

Campus Activities
The sisters of Phi Sigma Sigma are not followers, they are leaders. Besides being a member of a sorority, many of our sisters are involved in many organizations on campus. The Chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma itself is also very active on Northern's Campus. The Chapter partakes in many activities. In the past year we have won overall in both Homecoming and Winfest.

Social Activities
Even with all of the hard work and volunteering that we do we still make time for some fun. Each semester we have a Formal. During the fall semester we have our Fall Formal. During the winter semester we have our Sapphire Ball. We also get together with other sororities and fraternities, some of which are from other campuses. Some of the things we have had are spaghetti dinners, casino night, volleyball, sledding, and many more events.back to the top
