Port Sunlight. Model village built 1888 by W H Lever (1851-1925) for workers at the Lever Brothers (now Unilever) soap factory on the Wirral Peninsula at Birkenhead, near Liverpool. Designed for a population of 3,000, and covering an area of 353 ha/130 acres, it includes an art gallery, church, library, and social hall. It is now a part of Bebington, Merseyside. Preston, Industrial town (textiles, chemicals, electrical goods, aircraft, plastics, engineering, and shipbuilding), and administrative headquarters of Lancashire, on the river Ribble, 21 mi S of Lancaster. Oliver Cromwell defeated the Royalists at Preston 1648. It is the birthplace of Richard Arkwright, inventor of cotton-spinning machinery, and was a centre of the cotton industry in the 18th century. |
