NewDay

Long days have passed when friends have gone,
Life never stays still keeps moving on,
Lost comrades through our minds do go,
When the night-time comes that goes slow.

A generation has passed since as young men we fought,
young lives that we knew wasted for naught.
How can we who live on, survive and say
that live we must for our today.

Let war teach our children that peace is truth,
that death is lies that kills our youth.
That life is goodness and friendship and more
where understanding reigns over war.

A new spring of hope now is born,
new day of tolerance and care is dawn
gone is the night of darkness and despair
march on to tomorrow that leads us there.

Remembrance is ours to live for today,
to live our lives a different way.
To live our lives for those who theirs gave
to live on forever beyond the grave.

Our children are born inspite of the past,
they are born into freedom we fought for to last.
They live the tomorrows our friends gave away,
they live on forever-forever and a day.

Poem inspired by and is dedicated to Kate Murrell whose wish that something positive should be gained from the losses of War. May her wish be granted that peace and understanding between Nations and Creeds be that legacy and that it should reign eternal.
