| Nearby was the ancient site of Mycenae (Mykines) mentioned as the kingdom of Agamemmon in Homers Odyssey. The walls of this ancient Mycenae fortress were 39 feet high and 23 feet thick, so thick that the ancient Greeks felt that only the one-eye giant Cyclops could have built them. Inside the walls, excavations have uncovered a palace complex including courts, royal apartments, artisan workshops, storerooms, a secret cistern, and a royal cemetery (Grave Circle A) housing six shaft graves. The gold Death Mask and the Warrior Vase, presently housed in Athens National Archeological Museum, were discovered at this site. |
