Alice on the Underground

Chris Bond directs Alice on the Underground, an exciting new musical at the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch from 27 August - 18 September, co-produced between the Queens Theatre and Chicken Shed Theatre Company.

This 21st Century musical version of Alice In Wonderland follows Alices journey as she runs away from her dysfunctional family and bleak life on an East London council estate. As she escapes underground, Alice encounters the bizarre realities of life in London; and encounters everyone from a deaf body popper who busks as a white rabbit to feed his smack habbit, to a carriage full of gospel singing commuters.

With a childs eye view on a nonsensical and surreal adult world, Lewis Carrolls original Alice stories have a sinister side. This concept translated to 21st Century London is the essence of Alice on the Underground; a hard-hitting and entertaining modern opera, composed through a range of musical styles from rock to gospel, reggae to country and western.

This new production of Alice on the Underground is the first collaboration between the Queens Theatre and Chicken Shed. Its features members from both Chicken Sheds fully inclusive professional company and the Queens own resident company of actor-musicians. Chicken Shed are a company that throw new light on the way we look at ourselves, and never more so than in this ground breaking show.

The production is co-written and directed by Chris Bond, who adapted Sweeney Todd for Stephen Sondheims musical. Chris Bonds co-writer for Alice on the Underground is Chicken Sheds Poet in Residence Paula Rees, with music by Chicken Sheds Musical Director Jo Collins and David Carey.

The cast features: Emma Cambridge, Rebecca Chapman, Jo Collins, Edwin Din, Tommy Doyle, Emily Gardner, Liz Kitchen, Jane Milligan, Michael Offei, Wendy Parkin and Philip Reed. The production is designed by Rodney Ford and choreographed by Christine Niering with lighting by Chris Jaeger and sound by Whizz.

Tickets coast 8.50 - 16 and are available from the Box Office on 01708 443333.
