Alice on the Underground is a lively updated version of that Lewis Carroll masterpiece Alice in Wonderland.

It's a totally musical story with songs sung in rock, reggae, gospel and country and western styles.

Phil plays guitar in the band and was responsible for bringing the whole show to life.  And its a show that deals with some very hard hitting subjects such as drugs, prostitution, crime and religion.

Emma Cambridge as Alice is brilliant and acted superbly but its wrong to single people out for
praise as it is very much an ensemble piece.

The music keeps the show moving with pace, my personal favourite was The Jesus Line sung by the Happy Clapper Singers and Sister Dee, it's performed absolutely hilariously and managed to raise a smile or a giggle from many of the audience, myself included.  My other
favourite was Dont Look Now.

The other person, who should be mentioned, because many reading the review will know her, is Emily Gardner, who has appeared in many shows at Hornchurch and was last seen with Phil in Keep on Running.  Emily played the dual roles of Susan, the social worker and The Duchess.  Susan is neurotic and meek and wears a woolly hat and is absolutely hilarious.  The Duchess
on the hand is a tart with a heart, a Dolly Parton look-alike who is a working girl.

I went to Birmingham Rep not sure what to expect but I had a very enjoyable evening and Im looking forward to seeing the show again in Hornchurch.
