| I saw the first night of The Titfield Thunderbolt in Coventry and it was a rare treat to see Philip as he doesn't come up here that often and I've only seen him 3 times previously, in 1999 when he was Damage Crew in Return to the Forbidden Planet and this was the first time I saw him, I then saw him twice when he was Cookie in Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Having not seen him for 3 years I wasn't sure if I would recognise him but I was relieved to see that he hadn't changed at all. Philip is the busiest person in the show playing 5 different people and when I was reading the programme I wondered if it was a misprint as it said he was playing Mrs Bottomley and I did think that it probably was. It was odd seeing Phil flitting between different characters, going off as one and coming back a few seconds later as someone else but he was on stage lots and lots and he had some very funny lines and I did spend a lot of time laughing. My favourite character was when he was Mr Ruddock, the railway inspector. He was brilliant and I loved his accent and his whole manner as he came across as slightly bumbling but with his heart in the right place. That's not to say, as I have said about Mr Ruddock, that I didn't like his other characters as I thought that they were all brilliant and the programme was right, he does play Mrs Bottomley and it is really funny and I loved it. I'm hoping that it won't be too long until I see Phil again and please come back to the Midlands soon. Louise Salter |
