| Finally managed to make it down to Hornchurch to see The Titfield Thunderbolt and I wasn't disappointed. I really wasn't sure if the mix of Cut to the Chase with big names actors would work but it does really well. Kate O'Mara and Paul Leonard are really good in their respective parts, or in Paul's case parts on his own as he plays 3 different people. Steven Pinder I remembered from when he was Max Farnham in Brookside and he was brilliant in the dual roles of Mr Blakeworth and Rev Sam Weech. Mr Blakeworth isn't seen that much although he is mentioned and Steven is on stage most of the time as Sam Weech, the train mad vicar who wants to drive the engine. Steven is so funny is this role and he seems to be realy enjoying himself and he is a joy to watch. Phil Reed is the busiest person in the show, playing five different characters and having to do some ligtening fast costume changes. Phil does have such a wide variety of characters to play from the young to an old man of 60ish and even a woman which is one the funniest things he does, he is also really funny as Mr Ruddock, the railway inspector with a lisp. Finally we have Loveday Smith who plays three roles but is seen mainly as Joan Weech, niece to the Rev Sam Weech. As Joan, Loveady does really have an innocence about her and it's a part that really suits her. She is seen briefly as a man on the station and is also an over the top music hall artist who is pretending to be someone else, Miss Coggett, who is trying to stop the villiagers getting the licence to run the railway. It's a very fun show with great performances and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. Helen Baker |
