What a fantastic show The Silver Sword is, its emotive, funny and thought provoking all at the same time, and the story concentrates on the Balicki family and their struggle through the Second World War.

Phil Reed plays Edek, the only son of the Balicki family, and when the show starts he plays an eleven year old without a care in the world but by the end he a worldly wise fifteen year old who is very ill with TB.  He is very good in the role and the scenes when he is ill with TB are horrible to watch as he has this terrible cough (a symptom of TB) and the cough sounds very realistic.  Phil during the show plays the double bass, banjo and guitar.

Ian Conningham plays a wide range of roles from a child to the Burgomaster who is determined to rid Germany of all Polish refugees.  One of the highlights for me is when Ian is playing Ivan, a Russian soldier; Ian gets to show off his skills Russian dancing which he is very good at.  During the show, Ian plays the double bass and guitar.

A mention also must go to Cerianne Roberts at the youngest Balicki child, Bronia.  She has to play a child ranging from a three year old to a seven year old, I wasnt sure how this would work a grown adult playing such a small child but it works surprisingly well.

All the cast are excellent and it is very much a team effort with no one person taking the limelight, the set is really good and before the show starts you have sounds of planes flying over and bombs exploding this really helps set the atmosphere for the show.

Its great to see Ian and Phil doing something so different to their roles in Return to the Forbidden Planet and if you get the chance then you should go and see the show.

You will leave the theatre after seeing The Silver Sword in quite a sombre mood and it makes you think how war affects children especially with the recent Gulf war still in the minds of many people.

SEE THIS SHOW!
