Keep on Running Review by Debbie Forsyth

The whole cast of Keep on Running are brilliant.  Emily Gardner is outstanding as Kathy and gives such an all round performance, she also has a really powerful voice which is suited to the sixties songs she has to sing.

Simon Jessop had me in stitches as Bob; he has such brilliant actions and facial expressions which really added to his character.  I couldnt have imagined anyone else playing this part.

Id loved James Earl Adair as Prospero and I loved him as Man.  His role was that of a narrator and he did it so well, James also gave us a great rendition of My Generation.

What can I say about Maria Lawson as Michelle; she blew my socks off and totally amazed me.  She had a really wonderful voice that was so powerful yet so tender at the same time.  I loved the scene at the bus stop between Michelle and Don and the way she had to put him in his place.

Id always enjoyed watching Jane Milligan perform and this was no exception, she had several small roles to play as well as being one of the Matadors and playing loads of different instruments.  She was so funny as the tea lady in the Ford Plant and very sympathetic as the doctor but my favourite part had to be that of the Hippie Girl in which she managed to show off her amazing voice.

Wendy Parkin astounded me with her guitar playing during the show; she was lead guitarist and just brilliant.  It was also great to hear Wendy taking lead vocals on some of the songs such as California Dreamin and she reduced me to tears with her emotional eulogy to Marty after his death in a motorbike accident.

Scott Finlay provided some very entertaining voices during the game show spots and at times I found it hard to believe that it was Scott doing all those voices as they were very varied.

Nick Lashbrook is a regular at the Queens and I knew that he wouldnt disappoint in this.  Nick was just brilliant as Dancer, drummer with Marty and the Matadors but his part was more than that Dancer was a disturbed young man whose drug taking had confused his mind.  He picked fights with Don because he didnt like the same things and assaulted a chemist in the pursuit of drugs a very different performance from Nick as he made you believe that Dancer was evil.

As Marty, Jonathan Markwood made me forget that he has only ever played posh blokes in shows at the Queens.  He is convincing as leader of the Matadors and shows what a brilliant musician he is by playing both the guitar and keyboards.  Jonathan also has a very husky voice which he shows off to good effect during the songs.  My personal favourite s are When a man loves a woman and Fire Brigade.

And finally Phil Reed is Don, Im not sure exactly what to say about him as he totally amazed me, I sat there in stunned amazement for a couple of minutes after hed come on.  Id read many reports about how good he was but part of me thought that it was probably hype but I was wrong.  He gives a very strong performance as Don, quoting poetry and then falling head over heels in love with Kathy.  He also sings his heart out and his voice really suits the songs he had to sing.

I did thoroughly enjoy Keep on Running and its a pity that the show had such a limited run.  It is a show that deserves more widespread acclaim so lets hope that it tours at some point.
