This production sets Romeo and Juliet in 1930s Italy, at the height of Mussolini's Fascist regime. Two opposing families are in the midst of a bitter feud when their children meet and fall in love. Their scandalous liaison leads to bloodshed, banishment and eventually death.

Essential to Romeo and Juliet are the play's fight scenes, and for this production, one of Britain's leading stage and screen Fight Directors, Malcolm Ransom, has been working closely with the company on a series of dramatic and exciting fights. The gripping action will be accompanied by live music, including many popular songs from the 1930s, performed by the Queen's own actor-musicians.

As creator of the Olivier Award Winning show Return to the Forbidden Planet, based on Shakespeare's The Tempest, Bob Carlton has an excellent reputation for directing Shakespeare that is accessible without being patronising.
