On Saturday night I saw Romeo and Juliet for the fifth time and each time I see it the show gets better and better.

Matt Devitt excels as The Nurse, as he is really funny even when it a serious part of the show, he brings some much needed relief to Shakespeares most tragic tale.

What can I say about Nick Lashbrook apart from he is absolutely brilliant, he is mainly on stage during the first half of the show as the fiery Tybalt, he looks very sexy in his dinner jacket during the party scenes and he is one of the main characters to do the fighting.  This gives Nick a real chance to shine as his sword fighting was fantastic and I could hardly watch at the end of each performance when Nick dies at the end of the first half as although no blood is show its portrayed as a violent, bloody and gruesome end and one that Nick does so well.

Ifan Meredith and Maria Lawson as Romeo and Juliet are really comfortable in their roles now, both are newcomers to the Queens and are real assets to the company.  Ifan, in particular, has grown on me and I now find myself totally absorbed by him especially during the scenes where he has to deal with the fact that he has been banished and will never see Juliet again.

Jonathan Markwood as Mercutio is fantastic, he plays the part very camply and while on stage is always smoking and drinking champagne.  Having seen Jonathan in the straight laced Demetrius in A Midsummer Nights Dream I wasnt expected to see him acting like this and it was a completely different part for him to play and I really enjoyed his performance.

Phil Reed is great as the as the love struck Paris, he wants to marry Juliet and will do anything to ensure that this will happen.  He is particularly good in the scenes where Juliet is found dead, he displays so much grief and shock when he sees his bride to be dead on their wedding day.  Phil also plays the role of Bathazar who at the start of the show fights with Tybalt in the scenes that set up the whole play.

James Earl Adair plays Friar Laurence, this is quite a small role but an important one as Friar Laurence is Romeos advisor. James plays it with sympathy and shows the sensitivity needed when dealing with the young lovers.

The rest of the cast are excellent and while I have singled people out this is very much a team effort with everyone working together to make a brilliant play.  The other cast members are:- Richard Emerson as Peter/Friar John, James Waverley as Prince Escalus/Chorus, Emily Gardner as Lady Capulet, Richard Dax as Capulet, Carol Sloman as Lady Montague and Ben Hicks as Benvolvio.
