| Phil plays the dual roles of Paris and Bathazar in Romeo and Juliet with Bathazar being the smaller of the two roles. This production sets Romeo and Juliet in the 1930s at the height of Mussolinis regime and its an action packed affair with loads of sword fighting. The show starts with Phil as Bathazar having a confrontation with Tybalt played by Nick Lashbrook, swords are drawn and they both run around fighting and rolling on the floor. Later in the show Phil becomes Paris, a nobleman who is in love with Juliet and he wishes to marry her, not realising that she has already married Romeo. He arrives on the day of their wedding to find her and there is a very moving moment where he lays her wedding bouquet on her dead body. She is laid to rest in the family tomb and Paris is horrified to find Romeo in there. A fight ensues and Paris is killed by Romeo, its a nasty end as he stabbed several times by Romeo using a crow bar and Phil gives a very realistic performance of someone being stabbed to death. In his final moments Paris asks to be buried in the tomb with Juliet and I must admit that at this point I had tears in my eyes. This is truly a great show and Im glad that I went to see it. Ive focused on Phil because he is the person that I wanted to see in the show as Id become a fan of his after seeing him as Charlie in The Good Intent. Suzanna Nicholson Emerson Park |
