| The first night of the autumn tour was a nerve wracking one, there were three new cast members, how would they fit in and would they be as good as the old ones. When I saw in my seat some of the cast were already walking around, Wendy Parkin as Dee Tergent came over and said hello to me, I was struck by how friendly Wendy was and she always has this beaming smile on her face, she was soon off cleaning the ship with her feather duster. Andy Sceptic took the drill and then Bosun Arras made sure we knew what we were doing, not only doing it forward but backwards several times, Id forgotten what a booming loud voice Nick Lashbrook has as Bosun. The show started and I was drawn to how great Ian Conningham was as Captain Tempest, he played the part completely differently to Adrian Cobey and had injected so much more humour into the part, he had some great facial expressions and an over exaggerated John Wayne walk. Diana Croft was on top form, as always, as Gloria, Ive always loved her singing This Is a Mans World and tonight was no exception. Cameron Gordon was now the drummer on Great Balls of Fire and he gave the song a new lease of life, it seemed like his hands were a blur they were moving so fast. Nick and Phil were just great singing the Georgie Fame classic Yeh Yeh; they have a great on-stage chemistry that really comes across in that song. Ally Holmes as Cutie Cull, to me, seemed a little non descript. Im sure that her character and Ally herself will grow on me but at the moment I find her annoying and she doesnt seem to do anything except flirt with every man of the ship. Cookies solo has changed and the new one is just sensational and packs so much more of a punch than the old one, if you like the old one then you will just love the new revamped version. Ariel was in fine form at the end of Whos Sorry Now, getting the audience to scream after him and to sing back at him, this is one bit the whole audience really gets involved with and Fredrick really seems to feed off this interaction. Go Now was just as fantastic as ever, Diana seems to always put so much emotion into the song, it has a new twist for the new tour, Wendy plays a great guitar solo, if Phil is ever off then Wendy could play Cookies solono problem. Sarah Beaumont is always brilliant as Miranda, I love the transformation from sweet innocent Miranda into the vampish Miranda, she runs rings around Cookie during Shake, Rattle and Roll and is a blast on saxophone. Nick has always been one of my favourites as Bosun Arras, his great singing voice and musical ability make him a sure fire hit with the fans. Everyones favourite is always Phil as Cookie and Im sure that this tour wont be any exception, his cat impression before Tell Her is hilarious. The encore, as always, was amazing; everyone was on their feet singing and clapping, some were even dancing and the noise was unbelievable. The encore gives Cameron more of a chance to show of his drumming skills, twirling the drumsticks and throwing them up in the air and catching them. An excellent night out and a fantastic way to start the autumn tour. Julie Nicholls |
