| Well what can I say about The Good Intent, Id booked my tickets on the strength of Nick Lashbrook and Phil Reed being in it and I wasnt disappointed, its a great show. Nick plays Jim, a bloke who obviously has problems although at the start of the story we dont know what they are, he also for a while plays a pilot based at RAF Hornchurch but its as Jim that he really excels. During a bombing raid he stands in the street shouting at the German planes to come and get him. Later on, its told that Jim was serving in the Navy when the boat he was on was torpedoed, many were killed immediately but Jim managed to get to his friend and find a lifeboat, for 9 hours he clung onto the side of the lifeboat with one hand and his friend with the other, his friend was dead and Jim sustained injuries including a busted shoulder and his lungs being filled with oil. Jim runs away from hospital as he couldnt face going back and is being hunted by the military police for being a deserter. A courageous act by another persuades Jim to face up to his responsibilities and he goes back to the Navy. Phil plays Charlie, a young pilot based at RAF Hornchurch; this part really suits Phil as I could definitely imagine him as a dashing young pilot. Phils involved in a subplot in the show, that of Charlie and his lady love Edie, played brilliantly by Loveday Smith. Its a tragic tale as Charlie is killed in action; Phil gives a very moving performance especially when hes delivering a monologue about how he goes from flying to killing. Phil also plays one of the military policemen looking for Jim, this portrayal is one of efficiency and he seems very condescending of Rose (Jims wife) and treats her like a second class citizen. I couldnt finish this review without mentioning the songs, all of them are great and very catchy, a personal favourite is Thirst Things First, I was singing it for days after seeing the show. Nick sings The Best Way That I Can, this is sung twice and is a great song for showing off Nicks singing voice, he also sings a very small part of Waiting for the Rain. Phil sings the full version of Waiting for the Rain and a duet with Loveday called This Isnt Cricket which is a very emotional song, Loveday wasnt the only one who had tears rolling down her face. Again these songs show off Phils singing ability. Its a pity that the show wont be seen outside Hornchurch as its a great show that deserves to be seen by a wider audience, A triumph for Nick and Phil!! Julie Nicholls |
