| I attended The Queens Theatre Gala and while there were some names I recognised there were many more that I didnt. If Im honest I wasnt sure what to expect, all I knew is that members of the Cut to the Chase company were going to be performing songs from the shows that had been at The Queens and that an orchestra was going to be backing them. I had booked purely because Phil Reed was taking part, having been a huge fan of his since Planet and I also run the Yahoo discussion group for him, I was really looking forward to seeing him again. At the champagne reception I saw some faces that I recognised from Planet although I didnt know their names it seemed quite a mixed audience, Planet fans mixing with Hornchurch and Havering residents. Soon the gala got underway and Phil was soon on stage to perform his first song of the night, as its been said in other reviews he was wearing a dinner jacket and, in my opinion, he looked smart but also very sexy this first song passed by in a bit of a blur as I was busy telling my friend, who had never seen Planet, which one Phil was. He didnt disappoint with his version of Any Dream Will Do, its one of my favourite show tunes and it was wonderful to hear Phil sing it it was quite a big moment for him, I would imagine, stood on stage with an orchestra behind him but he showed no sign of nerves. Members of Cut to the Chase, including Phil, sang Fings Aint Wot They Used TBe in act two some of them I didnt imagine as singers like Jonathon Markwood who Id seen playing Demetrius in A Midsummer Nights Dream alongside Phil earlier in the year. Another of Phils co-stars from A Midsummer Nights Dream introduced the highlight of the gala for me, Celia White who played Hermia, gave them a great introduction and on walked Phil with Matt Devitt and Julian Littman, three Cookies together. They sang, of course, Shes Not There with each of them taking a turn at vocals and also playing a guitar solo it was a great moment for me and one that will stay with me for a long time to come, at the end of the song a lot of people, including myself, all cheered. I didnt get to speak to Phil after the show as he was talking to friends; its a pity because I really wanted to congratulation him on a brilliant performance. WELL DONE PHIL!!!! Roll on The Good Intent!!!! Caroline Watts |
