| Having seen Philip Reed as Cookie numerous times during the tour of Return to the Forbidden Planet I was really looking forward to see him perform in the 50th Anniversary Gala and he didnt disappoint. As soon as Id heard he was appearing I booked my tickets although I had no idea how involved he was going to be, when I got my copy of the programme I saw that he was singing four songs although I had only heard of two of them. The show started and soon it was time for Phil to take to the stage, he walked out looking very different to the last time I had seen him at Hornchurch which was when he was playing Lysander in A Midsummer Nights Dream. He looked gorgeous in his dinner jacket and his hair had grown so that he had a fringe. Its Easy to Sing from Salad Days saw him taking on a comedy role and he only sang properly towards the end of it. Next came one of the two songs I had heard of, Any Dream Will Do, it was brilliant to see Phil stood up on stage singing whilst being backed by an orchestra. Having only ever heard him singing the 50s and 60s hits from Planet this was a real departure for me and he proved that he was got a brilliant singing voice a possible Joseph one day? I certainly think he could do it!! The second act came and Phil took to the stage with Jane Milligan and others to sing Fings Aint Wot They Used TBe, this wasnt a song that I knew but it was great and seeing Phil and Jane standing by each other reminded me of their days together in Planet. Then came the moment that I and I think a lot of other people had been waiting for, Shes Not There performed by not one but three Cookies. Celia White introduced them and on walked Phil along with Matt Devitt and Julian Littman, Jane also came on to play keyboards on the song. Matt sang the first lines of the song and I felt a shiver go down my spine, this was something special. Each of them performed guitar solos and it was great to hear part of Phils solo and it took me back to all those times that Id seen Planet seeing all there of them on stage was a truly wonderful experience and I was glad that I was there to witness it. In conclusion Phil was just outstanding and it was great to see him back on stage, I now cant wait to see him in The Good Intent in November. Catherine Arlove - Homerton |
