| In a show that lasts roughly two and a quarter hours, Phil Reed as Lysander gets punched in the stomach making him fall to his knees, gets his face slapped, goes asleep on the stage twice for ten to fifteen minutes, slides down a steep chute, walks across the stage with a woman hanging around his neck, challenges another soldier to a fight, declares his love to two different women, kisses and caresses both of the women, sits on a cushion to watch a play, briefly plays the flute and still manages to look every inch the dashing hero. He is dressed in an Athenian soldiers uniform which consists of a beige jacket with wide lapels and gold buttons, navy trousers with a red stripe down the side, black knee length boots, a white cotton shirt with frills at the cuff, and a wide belt to which his scabbard and sword are attached. As most people probably know Phil Reed has grown a beard for the role of Lysander, which resembles Beppes from Eastenders only longer under his chin. He gives his all to the part he plays, but then he always does, and I think from the look on his face when he is on stage he is enjoying every moment of this show. Alas when he gets his kit off to go to sleep it is only his jacket, belt and sword that come off. This was the first Shakespeare play I have seen and I did not know what to expect, but I was not disappointed it was a truly brilliant show. Pat Ball |
