| Sensational is how I would describe Phil in Pump Boys and Dinettes. He plays Jackson and is just brilliant. The show isnt overly long at 1 hour 40 minutes including the interval and each half comes in at 40 minutes but what two packed 40 minutes they are. Songs are packed in along with stories told by the various cast members. Its odd how its billed as a musical because as such I wouldnt say it is as it has no story running through it, its more like a piece of entertainment. As Jackson, Phil takes joint lead vocals on loads of songs and even when he is doing backing vocals you can hear him very clearly over everyone else. His only proper solo song is Mona, which Jackson says is about a girl he loves who works in Woolworths. This is a really catchy song which has my toes tapping; there is even a small guitar solo in it. Instruments are varied as not only does Phil play electric and acoustic guitars but bass, keyboards, accordion, harmonica and a strange stringed thing he plays on his lap which looks like its played like a guitar except flat. There is loads of comedy in the show and all the cast seem really relaxed and it was just like a big party on stage. Great show and one I want to see again. Katy Lonsdale - Hornchurch |
