A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

Review by Amanda Westlake

I saw A View From The Bridge on Saturday and thought it was excellent, the quality of acting was superb and the shows ending was breathtaking! I came out of there shaking!

I particularly enjoyed seeing Diana back on stage doing what she does best! She was outstanding and it was a triumphant return for her and she should be very proud of herself. She played the role of Beatrice to a T, she was a mixture of a loyal and loving housewife, a strong independant woman but Eddie kept saying she was too trusting and niaive, but at the same time she was more realistic than Eddie and seeing her watch Eddie die was so moving.

I also loved Phils performance as Rodolpho, his accent was fantastic and he played the role superbly. I found him to be very convincing as the flambouyant italian, and it was funny to see how all of his "modern man" trates, such as dancing and singing and sewing, were perceived as a sign of being gay, which in those times did not go down well with the strict catholic beliefs of the Italian American culture.

James was on top form as Alfieri, I found the scenes between him and Eddie very powerful and the compassion and emotion James played when he realises Eddies fate was brilliant.

Philip Whitchurch as Eddie was outstanding, I had not seen him live before but had seen him on the TV either in The Bill or My Hero, so I knew he was a great actor, and it was great to be able to see him live and to see him acting so well. He was a very convincing as the over protective uncle and you could see how easy it was for Eddie to become obsessed with his neice and to take matters out of control.

Maria Lawson played the role of Catherine perfectly, Maria is very good as the innocent and niaive Catherine, who falls for the flambouyant Rodolpho, who is so very different from his quiet brother Marco.

James Waverley played the role of Marco, he has a massive stage presence not only from his size as he towered above most of the cast members, but the role of marco was to me, a quiet, reflective and somewhat brooding which James played to perfection.

Richard Emmerson and Eamonn O'Dwyer played a couple of roles which were only small but I always love seeing Richard acting as he is always a real character. I am looking forward to seeing more of Eamonn so am looking forward to seeing Wait until Dark.

So to sum up the show, it was a blinding show, it felt like you were on a roller coaster as you knew something was going to happen but you were not 100% sure what it was going to be, then all of a sudden a big dip that takes you by surprise but gives you one hell of a rush!
