RESEARCH REPORT

Possible further Steps

The pre-feasibility estimate has shown that much work needs to be done to complete the Photo Visual Archives and Gallery, but it is clear that there is a rich source of materials on which to build. The project has clarified the sources of these materials. Following are the necessary steps to take to complete the Photo Visual Archives and Gallery:

  1. Make an inventory of and classify private individuals' collections, both those identified in Metro Manila and chose still to be tapped in the provinces.
  2. Offer assistance to institutions that have not made an inventory and a catalogue of their materials.
  3. Make digital copies of existing materials for storage and exhibition purposes.

Further steps to maximize the research project have also been identified:

  1. A Conference on Photographs from the American Colonial Period in the Philippines. The use of these photographs for academic research and exhibition is not well-appreciated in the country. A conference can be organized where papers are read and workshops given on the various possible research topics based on these photographic materials and on the presentation of these materials for popular and educational uses. The proceedings- of the conference should also he published.
  2. An Exhibit Featuring the Photographic Heritage Gathered in the Project. A traveling exhibit can be organized to illustrate the value and use of these photographs for heritage and research purposes.
  3. A Digital Collection (on Compact Disk) of Available Materials. An annotated digital gallery of available materials can be made for research, education, and heritage purposes. Such a product will help researchers, students, and the general public access photographs previously unavailable to them. This can also be used by history teachers as supplementary educational material. The value of such photographs should be promoted among researchers and the general public as these can be a valuable educational tool, not only for photography but also for Philippine history.
  4. An Annotated Index of Existing Materials. An annotated index of existing materials can he produced for easy reference of researchers. This way, even if no archive and gallery exists, the photographs can still he accessible to them. Such an index will make them aware of existing materials and will direct them to the location of the materials.
  5. A Quarterly Update of the Project. A quarterly update featuring the work done and discussions on the use and value of the project can be published and distributed for popularization of the use of photographic materials.
