Inter-Faith Prayers Call for Immediate End to US Invasion of Iraq
In line with the March 20 Global Day of Action, Muslims, Catholics and
Protestants from the various congregations and denominations will
gather at the Liwasang Bonifacio today to join His Excellency Vice
Pres. Teofisto Guingona and various anti-war groups to call for peace
in Iraq, Palestine, Haiti, Philippines and all countries presently
suffering from U.S. war crimes and intervention.
The inter-faith rally is a dramatic call to all governments who
support the war to yield to the worldwide clamor for peace and to pull
out their troops in Iraq. It is also an outpouring of sentiments
against the declaration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that the
Philippine government will continue its backing to the so-called
“coalition of the willing” and that she will not order the withdrawal
of the Filipino contingent in Iraq.
PILGRIMS FOR PEACE, an inter-faith and multi-sectoral network of peace
advocates in the Philippines, together with the PHILIPPINE
INTERNATIONAL FORUM, PEOPLE’S
FORUM ON PEACE FOR LIFE, NATIONAL COUNCIL
OF CHURCHES IN THE
PHILIPPINES, PROMOTION OF CHURCH PEOPLE’S RESPONSE and other broad church groups, expect to gather hundreds
of peace-loving Filipinos as well as
foreigners currently staying in the Philippines to join the gathering
in Liwasang Bonifacio and march to U.S. Embassy later in the
afternoon.
In a statement, PILGRIMS FOR PEACE asserts, “It is time for the US
government to heed the worldwide clamor for peace and pull-out of all
US war troops. Much blood has been spilt already in the name of the
US’ “war on terror”, and the continuing occupation of Iraq will
further spell doom on the Iraqi people. The so-called threat of
“weapons of mass destruction” which the US arrogantly used to push its
war of aggression is now universally panned.” The statement also
stressed that the US occupation of Iraq was unjustifiable in the
beginning and is still unjustifiable now.
