ACTIVITIES

Academic Year 2000-2001 saw the Department of Philosophy, Human Resource Development and Social Sciences sponsor the following activities:

  1. Academic Lectures

    True to the essence of philosophizing, varied topics were presented this school year on philosophy. Monthly lecturers were resident and guest professors from other universities, among them:

    PROF. R. RAFAEL DOLOR, "Confucian Philosophy and the Filipino Family"
    DR. JING REYES, "Philippine Revolution and Philosophy"
    DEAN RAYMUNDO BRIONES, "John Dewey and Philippine Catholic Education"
    DR. ALFREDO CO, "Chinese Philosophers and their Philosophy of Death"

    Other lecturers for the remaining part of the semester will be delivered by DR. MANUEL DY of the Ateneo de Manila University, SIS. MARY JOHN MANANZAN, OSB of St. Scholastica's College and PROF. RANDY DAVID of the University of the Philippines.

  2. Chief Executive Officers Forum

    As part of the requirements of the course Organizational Development, a CEO Forum was held last September 30, 2000 at the SGV Conference Room of the Asian Institute of Management Center in Makati City with the theme, "Organizational Development: Bracing the Challenges of the 21st Century". All majors of the Department attended the said forum.

  3. Christmas Party

    A Christmas Party was celebrated by the Philosophy-HRD Circle of San Beda last December 16, 2000. Sophomore, junior and senior students took time out to join in this activity.

  4. Team Building Seminar

    Because of the merging between the Departments of Philosophy and Social Sciences, a Team-Building Seminar was conducted last December 19, 2000 at the Audio-Visual Room of San Beda College. This seminar was participated in by the faculty members of the two merging departments and was facilitated by Ms. Cynthia Yniguez and Esperanza Hernandez, formerly of the Human Resource Department of San Miguel Corporation. Another seminar will be held this summer at Calapan, Mindoro.

  5. Publication of Departmental Position Papers

    The Department made its position on national political issues known through the posting of three position papers last December and January. These position papers were entitled, "A CALL TO RESIGN," "LET NOT DECEPTION RULE OUR LAND," and "A CALL FOR RENEWAL." Copies of these position papers are available.

  6. Community Extension Service

    As a way of assisting other institutions offering philosophy in the country today, the Department has initiated an exchange teaching program with the St. Augustin'es Major Seminary of the vicariate of Calapan, Mindoro. This year, two professors from the Department, Profs. Feorillo Petronilo Demeterio III and Maxwell Felicilda, delivered week-long lectures on Hermeneutics and Post-Modern Philosophy before the junior and senior seminarians of the vicariate.

  7. Interaction

    This year's inter-action will be held at the Miriam College campus on February 18 and March 4, 2001. Participants to this activity will be all freshmen and students taking up PEP II (Personality Enhancement Program). Various activities are lined up for this interaction to be facilitated by the Peer Counselors' Groups of San Beda College and Miriam College. This is through the assistance of the Office of the Guidance Services of San Beda College.

  8. Art Exhibit

    An exhibit of the creative works of students in Humanities and of philosophy major Noli Coronado will be presented on February 26, 2001 at the Sabater Court of San Beda College. This exhibit will have for its theme, "SAN BEDA: HAMON SA KABATAAN NG BAGONG SIGLO" Paintings and sculpture works will be exhibited for one week. Selected artworks may be for sale as well.

  9. Philosophy Week Celebration

    This year's Philosophy Week will be celebrated from February 26 to March 2. Activities include philosophical symposia, HR lecture, debates, Philosophy Caf�, Poetry Reading, and Human Tableau. This week will be culminated with the First Alumni Gathering of the Department of graduates from the years 1988 to 2000 on Friday, March 2, 2001.

  10. Out-of-Campus Tours

    The Department, through the assistance of selected student organizations, will sponsor three outdoor activities:

    1. A Lecture-Demonstration on Filipino Music at the Aldaba Hall and a Guided Tour of the Vargas Museum at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City on February 4, 2001
    2. Lakbay Aral sa Corregidor on February 5-7, 2001.
    3. Tour to the ISKON, Krishna-Consciousness Center at Merville Park, Paranaque City on February 25, 2001.

  11. Thesis Defense

    The graduating members of the Department will present and defend their philosophical researches on March 10 and 11, 2001. Almost sixty philosophy majors are due to defend their researches before a panel of three examiners. This thesis defense is open to the public.
