Hookworms- Hookworms are microscopic intestinal parasite. They can cause amenia among other problems, including death for young puppies. Some symptoms may include dark or bloody stool, diarreah, lameness, lack of growth. Puppies are usually born with hookworms or can contract them by their mothers milk.
Roundworms- Theese worms look like spaghetti. They can cause a dull coat and a pot bellied appaearance. More severe symptoms include vomitting, diarreah, and severe caughing. This is also acquired during gestation
Whipworms-This parasite is the most difficult to get rid of. Part of the reason is beacuse eggs can last years through many enviornmental conditions. and they will not show up in fecal examinations. Symptoms include diarreah and abdominal pain. It acn cause bloody stool, weight loss, amenia, and dehydration. This parasite is passed from infected waste to new host.
Coccidios and Giardiasis-Puppies are usually affected by theese protozoal infections, especially in kennel settings or where large numbers of puppies are kept together. Older dogs will not show any symptoms unless they are under stress. Symptoms include diarreah, weight loss, and lack of appetite. This infection may not always show up in a fecal sample.
Tapeworms- Tapeworms are usually acquired when your dog ingests an infected flea or hother host. Luckilly this is one parasite that will not hurt a host as other worm infections. The biggest concern is the loss of nutrients that the host loses because a tapeworm will take them. Tapeworms can become several feet long in length and is made up of several segments. It will not show up positive in a fecal examination but will be diagnosed by rice resembling items near the dogs anus.
Heartworm Disease- This worm lives in the heart and adjacent bloodvessels of the lungs. They produce microfilaria, which is circulated through the bloodstream. Your dog could be infected with one to hundreds. It is a life threatening parasite and is so easy to prevent.
