So your rotty is in great health, well now let's keep that beast pretty
First let's discuss what the AKC's physical standards are for rottweilers
Tail is docked short and elongates the topline
Proportion of height to length is 9-10
Paws are round and compact
Hind paws are longer than front paws
Ears are medium sized, triangular, & close to the head
Eyes are dark brown & almond shaped
Strong upper & lower jaws, lips & gums are dark
Chest is 50% of height. Muscle and bone mass should balance the frame
Head is medium length& broad between ears
Fur is black, straight, medium length, coarse, &lies close to the body, with appropiate black and tan markings
Topline is firm, level with a straight line extending from the withers to the croup
Ears that flap over like a rottweiler is an ideal place for dirt and other organisms to hide; it's soft, warm, and dark. Inspect ears every two weeks and clean with a clean soft cloth when needed, taking care not to enter the inner canal.
Dog's teeth are not usually prone to cavities but are easily proned to gingivitis, gum disease, and infections. A healthy mouth will have 42 teeth. The AKC has allowed for two missing teeth only. Inspect mouth reguarly to prevent unnecessary tartar build up, and to check for dental injuries that can lead to infection. If you begin inspection during puppyhood, it will make it easier when your dog is 120 lbs.
A rottweiler's foot is round and compact so nails need to be upkept to prevent strain, pain or injury to the foot. Nails should not curve over nor touch the ground. If your rotty's nails need to be trimmed and it's your first time, consult your vet or an experienced dog owner to show how , as to prevent cutting to far into the quick. Again try to get your dog used to nail trimming as a puppy, because wrestling rottweilers is quite exhausting.
A healthy eye is shiny and bright. The white of the eye should not display any yellow, redness, or inflammation. A light discharge is quite normal and can be cleaned with a clean, lint free, soft cloth. Or your rotty will bury their head in your bed or your nicest outfit and do it themselves.
Rottweilers' coats are short and coarse and should NEVER be cut or trimmed. Regular brushings help cut down on shedding and aids in distributing the natural oils throughout. It's also a great distraction for them when they're chewing on the couch.
Rotties should really only be bathed when necessary, such as discovery of a trash can or mud holes. Again regular brushings will help keep your rotty clean. Be aware that some shampoos, especially flea and tick shampoos, can over clean your rotty's fur making their skin and fur dry and itchy.
