This is one of two pages that we dont' enjoy writting. When owning such large and curious (actually nosey is more like it) dogs, accidents may occur. This is a list of handy items to keep on hand . We like to keep everything in a basket so we have evrything ready should need be.
Latex gloves-TRUST ME! you'll be glad to have them
Maxi pads-yeah a little weird but they're great for large wounds, and have great absorbancy
Paper towls
Old towls that are designated for your dogs only
An old sock-this can help if your dog wont leave their bandage on
Plastic sandwhich bags-your vet might need some type of sample, better than using your tupperware (see I told you those rubber gloves would be handy!)
Pedyalite-should your dog have continous vomiting and/or diarreah, you want to make sure they wont become dehydrated
Tweezers-make sure the tips match, you can use theese to remove stingers, splinters, or foreign objects in cuts
A squeezable bottle of iodine-it's easier to squeeze on the wound as appose to using prep pads for cleaning
Spray antiseptic-once agian I recommend the spray kind for ease of application
Surgical Tape-look for kinds that wont stick to hair/fur
Pepto Bismuth-because rottys get tummy aches too
Sharp scissors-to cut through bandages or anything else your dog might be caught in
Various cotton balls, swabs, and pads to aid with cleaning injuries to grooming
Ice packs and a heating pad-gorgeous they are, graceful they are not
Rectal thermometer-the name says it all
Lubricant-see above
Meat tenderizer-mix with water to create a paste, this is good foe insect stings or jellyfish stings
Eye dropper-I like the measured kind so you can give accurate dosage
Clean warm blankets-have two on hand. one to keep your dog warm if it goes into shock and another to transport your dog easily. have another person aid with this.
An extra leash-no matter how much you two love each other, a dog might snap at its owner out of pain and/or fear. An extra leash can be fastened into a muzzle to protect yourself and the dog from further injury. It can also be used as a tourniquet, but only in worse case scenarios.
Flash light-I know this is an obvious, but do you kow where yours is? Do the batteries work? Accidents happen at night more so than the day.
Most important-Patience and calmness, your dog will feed off your emotions.
Your dog's records with updated shot history
You will be allowed to choose priner friendly option
Have you experienced an emergency? How did you handle it? Share your story on our message board.
