I always hunt for rocks and shells when I'm on a beach. Today was no different. Lillian and I found some great ones last year at a beach on the Burin Peninsula. Last month I found teeny shells and smooth rocks to make into a necklace for my granddaughter, who loves the beach but lives in Plano, Texas. Today on Middle Cove Beach I found some gorgeous green and purple rocks, made smooth by the action of the tides. My favorite was the worry rock with a depression already made in it. As I was looking down I saw this little beachscape. I figured we could play Where's Waldo? Can you find the feather in the photo?
After we found a spot to eat and devoured the tuna sandwiches, I wandered down to the water and observed the goings on. A new generation of Newfoundlanders were learning how to catch caplin. Dads, Moms and Grannies were out in their boots, showing their techniques to the kids. Loved to see the young lad decked out in his rubber boots watching his dad. He never did venture out into the water, but was content to play with the fishies in the bucket. His older sister, however, was right in there scooping them up with glee.

One small girl, about 5, insisted she needed a chance to get the fishes and when she was given the bucket to hold, screamed her way down the beach, "I don't like fishes!" Another family took turns with the net and the bag they were using to hold the caplin. Grandmother, Mom, daughter and son all took turns chasing down the elusive fish. Some got way and landed on the rocks behind.

When we had finished our supper, Jim podcasted a bit from the beach. He's facing away from the water so the wind doesn't obliterate his words. Lillian went down to the action later and did a little podcasting herself. Then it was my turn to play host and Jim and Lillian's to play tourist. Last year when Vic took me to the Festival of Friends in Outer Cove, we passed by a sight I never expected to see in Newfoundland - a castle! A gentleman from California is constructing a castle on the side of a cliff in Outer Cove. It's just the last thing you expect to see as you drive down the road. And it's still not ready to be inhabited after over a year of construction! We pulled over to the side of the road and got out a took a photos and I think Jim may have been podcasting also. You really should subscribe to this podcast. Jim's going to take you soundseeing each week and you can also get to hear some of the Atlantic Crossroads Festival and the Islands of Song Gala.

When we got back from Middle Cove, we relaxed a bit and then went off to see Dave Panting at Erins. I do like how that man plays his instruments. He switches from guitar to mandola to mandolin and sings trad as well as modern songs. He has a great voice and is very personable. And breaks out the instruments at the drop of a hat! Fun to party with. Guess what time we got home? Not telling! :P
