Newfoundlandia
Of course , as the woman we met at the ferry on our first trip said, "Once you've been here, you'll be back." We could not stay away and returned the next year for a longer period of time.

Taking the ferry from Sydney in the afternoon was a new experience. I was too excited to sleep and prefer to spend my time out on deck with the wind in my hair. I like that! I sat on the stern deck working on my cross-stitch map of Newfoundland done in the NFLD tartan. It was coming along quite nicely and I wanted to finish it before we got to Newfoundland soil. I had just finished the last cross-stitch and was ready to start on the backstitch outline of my favorite province when this guy came over to watch me. I was surprised a guy would be interested in it but he expressed knowledge that it was counted cross stitch and explained to me that he also does it ever since he was laid up for 4 months after an accident.

He and his wife met in the 60s when he was stationed in Placentia. They met on a blind date and it was love at first sight! They married after six months and moved to the Boston States. Her relatives still live in Newfoundland and she comes back whenever she can. He just kept expressing awe at this NFLD tartan map I was doing. I offered him the chart and directions when I was finished.
The view from the lighthouse was breathtaking and extremely windy. I was excited and honored to have been asked to accompany someone to the lighthouse whose family had a role in the past manning it. She is running a picnic catering service at the Lihghthouse, called Lighthouse picnics, offering home- made soups and sandwiches, lemonade, tea and dessert. Sounded like a good deal to me!
Newfoundland Tartan
We arrived in Newfoundland at 8 AM and made our way to see Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove area. I think I might someday end up buying a house here. What beautiful scenery and so close to the city! Many towns on the Avalon peninsula are like that.Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove and Witless Bay also fit the bill.  We had the fortune of visiting Ferryland to see the archeological dig there as well as the lighthouse. The road to the lighthouse was no picnic however and we ended up with a flat tire. Going out in O'Brien's boat in Bay Bulls was another adventure worth having - Puffins galore greeted us and whales!
We discovered a few wonderful place names in our travels around - Heart's Content being one of them. Heart's Delight, Little Heart's Ease, Happy Adventure, Come-By-Chance, Dildo, and Witless Bay are but a few of the unusual town names we passed by or visited on this trip.

Vic and I enjoyed our time checking out the lighthouse and the historic site of the first transatlantic cable laid for communication.

Whales and puffins were also a favorite thing to see on this trip. Read about all our adventures
HERE. But don't forget to come back!
