| PHILLIP WILCHER : His Music and What Others Say | ||||||||||
| That the music of Australian composer Phillip Wilcher has not been taken up extensively by our pianists is surprising, for his wide range of imaginative compositions display a fine understanding of keyboard writing. I believe Wilcher's piano music constitutes an important and welcome addition to the repertoire of Australian music. Emeritus Professor Sir Frank Callaway AO,CMG,OBE * On Wilcher's SCHERZO IN B MINOR: Unbelievable - it's my new favourite work, not just of yours, but of all works. Perfect in every way. This piece is so fresh. You are one of the great composers. It is now on my programme I am playing in America, Europe and maybe Japan. Just flipping through the score....it's a masterpiece. Paul Carasco, pianist * Whether he (Wilcher) wishes to transport the listener to a cafe in paris or to the top of a mountain in Java, his skilful use of harmony, rhythm and tempi creates the perfect atmosphere. Dr.Jeanell Carrigan, pianist (Source: 2MBS-FM Fine Music -interview with Mike Smith) * Wilcher's music shows an extraordinary sense of symmetry and beauty. Dr. Rita Crews * What a garden of earthly delights. How wonderful to find a LIVING composer willing to write in melody. It's really splendid stuff of the highest honour. Iain Greig - pianist, teacher (UK) * I find great satisfaction in the fact that we - Australia - have one composer who can succeed in a medium of sensitivity in spite of the ugliness and violence predominating in so many countries. Dr.Miriam Hyde AO,OBE, Hon.D.Litt, Hon F Mus, LRAM,ARCM * On Wilcher's song A SEA RITUAL: Thanks for the good batch of songs. I made a setting of darley's SEA RITUAL for voice and orchestra. Your version is different from - but as good as - mine. On Wilcher's piano piece CONTINUAL DEW: Of your new pieces, I like best CONTINUAL DEW - it has a true and touching theme. On Wilcher's JAVA SUITE for piano: Effective and skillful! Ned Rorem, President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Pulitzer Prize winning composer, essayist and diarist. * I very much enjoyed the balance of buoyancy and melancholy - just the thing for certain afternoons. Robert Dessaix - author * On Wilcher's TALATAT SUITE and ETUDES TEDESCHI: I received your manuscript and was thrilled at what I saw and played through. On Wilcher's full length RECITAL: Wonderful to get your letter and even more thrilling to read the recital you have written for me! I must say that it is an amazing honour, so thank you from the bottom of my heart. On Wilcher's A FORCE OF NATURE (for Maria Raspopova): Bravo! Some beautiful sounds there. On Wilcher's SCHERZO IN B MINOR and PIANO TRIO: Beautiful! I would love to hear the trio.It must be a totally different kettle of fish to write chamber music, I really admire you. I love your work - it all comes across as being very unified and cohesive. Simon Tedeschi, pianist |
