PHILLIP WILCHER : TO A MAIDEN - song review by Henry Howell
This is one of several poems of Shelley, set by Phillip Wilcher, writing in a style which he commands so well, adagio cantabile, and dedicated to Gaby Piccin. Again, a miniature, opening tranquillo in the piano, left hand, then gradually filling out as the song progresses. This is very much a high voice song, not excessively so, but certainly in the tessitura. As so often happens in a Phillip Wilcher song, the theme is allowed to develop by the repetition of the first verse in the second, just enough to establish both the song and the artist's interpretation. This is not really for the amateur, requiring a fairly mature vocal development and command of technique, but a very useful addition to the singer's repertoire, and one which I am happy to recommend.
