PHILLIP WILCHER :  SONG REVIEW BY HENRY HOWELL
"DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP"

This lovely anonymous poem, which speaks, in ringing optimistic tones of an afterlife, has been sensitively set by Phillip Wilcher, with his usual economy of writing, and with the rare ability to transmit his message without undue "waffle". Not an easy beginning, the first four bars are unaccompanied, and need to be sung by an artist with impeccable pitch perception, for obvious reasons. The range is E flat 4, to A flat 6, so this song is really not for a beginner, but in the hands of a good interpreter, will work extremely well. The melody line is not difficult, is very beautiful and is well supported by a strong piano part. Again, in common with Phillip Wilcher's songs, this piece is not quite as obvious as a first reading might, but will reward conscientious study by good musicians.
