PHILLIP WILCHER'S MUSIC FOR CHILDREN REVIEWED : A MUSICAL OFFERING - review by Henry Howell
An interesting volume from Phillip Wilcher, rather different from his usual songs and piano pieces. A MUSICAL OFFERING is, in Mr. Wilcher's own words "a lesson plan comprising six early childhood musical activities." The words and music are by Phillip Wilcher. Small children will enjoy the words of the songs, and, I firmly believe, will lose no time in applying action to them. Opening with a solo piano designed for listening, this short piece explores the keys and colours, preparing the children for what follows. This is followed by two songs for training the ear to intervals, and names and terms used in solfege. There are songs for training the ear in various other ways, action songs, which are always popular, and a song of farewell, THE CUCKOO AND THE OWL. The entire volume can be used as a single lesson, and will certainly stimulate the mind and the ear during those essential formative years. As a bonus, there are drawings made by Luke Wilcher, the composer's nephew at the age of five years, which will find instant appeal for the pre-school child. This volume also has the imprimatur of luminaries such as the late and much loved Dulcie Holland, and I am happy to join this illustrious band.
