Philippine Tramways

Horse drawn tramcars are thought to have been operated from the 1870's, followed by steam trams in Malabon and electric tramcars from 1905 until the Second World War when very little survived and they were abandoned.

Photographs of horse trams in Manila and San Roque can be found on the

Picturesque Old Philippines pages of the

University of Vienna, Austrian Philippine Website.

The Manila Malabon Tramway purchased four steam tramway

locomotives from Schichau of Germany in 1887.

Manila Tramways started with the Compania de los Tranvias Filipinas

who operated horse trams until the Manila Railways and Light Company

was formed in 1903 and then became the Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company

(Meralco) operating electric trams from 1905 until World War II.
