Philippine Lumber Railways

The Philippine Islands were covered by tropical rainforest and timber was cut down for construction work as the Islands were colonized.  Pampanga, sometimes called the "First Province" to the north of Manila on Luzon was almost cleared of timber by the 1830's leaving fertile plains for all types of agriculture.  Similarly as other areas were cleared the land was used for agriculture until the 1970's when deforestation had become so widespread that restrictions were placed on logging. However it was the early twentieth century before Lumber Railways were constructed, mainly on Luzon, Negros and Mindanao.

The most well known being Insular Lumber Company because they were still operating Steam Locomotives until 1975 at Fabrica on Negros Occidental and then at Hinoba-an.

Gingoog Timber Company Possibly earlier name of Anakan Lumber Company.

Insular Lumber Company, Inc., Fabrica, and Hinoba-an(Asia), Negros Occidental.

The company started operating c.1904 and continued at Fabrica until December 1975 when they moved south to a new mill at Hinoba-an. Logs had been sent by barge from Hinoba-an to Fabrica for processing since 1962. A number of Lima Two and Three Truck Shays and No.7 a Baldwin Mallet had operated from Fabrica but only one Small Shay No.10 was taken to Hinoba-an where it was used on the quay.
