Economics for Managers
Kazakh Institute of Management, Economics, and Forecasting
Almaty, Kazakhstan
17 November, 2000
Topic for the day:
Technology and Innovation
Attached are five pages from Mansfield’s text, Managerial Economics. (3rd. Ed., pp.291-296)
First Hour:
- Read through the Summary of the chapter, Technological Change and Industrial Innovation.
- Divide into ten groups; each group will be assigned one problem.
- Using all available resources—the library, your instructor, other instructors, fellow students—develop a complete answer for your assigned problem. (If you finish early, consider helping other groups.)
Second Hour:
- Each group will present their assigned problem and solution. If a complete solution is not possible, a thorough explanation of the problem may suffice.
Homework, due 24 November:
- Develop a case study—like the one you gave me last week—but specific to one of two topics:
- Innovation and Technology, or
- Strategic Behavior
Extra:
The last page of today’s handout is a brief case study on robotics and diffusion rates. If you need to make-up a missed homework, you may use these topics as a basis for an extra assignment.
