The McConnell and Brue text give an account of deregulation of the U.S. airline industry in the 1970’s. Though the decision was controversial at the time, the authors argue that the benefits of deregulation probably outweigh the costs.
- Read and review the above account carefully.
- Find a single industry or firm that has been deregulated--perhaps through privatization—in Kazakhstan sometime in the last ten years.
- Find customers, employees, and/or suppliers—anyone associated with your industry—and discuss the industry’s growth and problems since deregulation. In your own way, try to find out if deregulation (privatization) of your industry has provided an overall benefit to society.
- Write a short report on the ways one can best measure the social costs and benefits of privatization. Use your own research to demonstrate.
